Here is the idea, we pick a Wine, Beer or Whiskey (Bourbon or Scotch) and we all procure it, then on a set date we all enjoy it on the same evening and give tasting notes and hang out in the Hubski IRC. We could also have a cocktail that we all make etc... the possibilities for providing reason for internet drunkenness are endless.
Anyone interested? I'll do shout-outs to those I think might be interested and those that were on the recent wine post

What do you think, bad idea... or brilliant idea?
Hilarious. In particular: Some test subjects report a slight numbing agent in MD 20/20, similar to the banana paste that the dentist puts in your mouth before injecting it with novocain. Anyone that can afford a dentist should steer clear of this disaster.
on board! (assuming that I'm not working when everyone else is drinking ... and if I am, I'll try to steal away for long enough to solicit a taste of the relevant elixir from our well-appointed bar). Also, what's the hubski IRC, and how does one "get there?" Is it like Diagon Alley?
Ditto on the will gladly participate assuming I'm not at work while everyone's drinking.
This could be fun. I'm also down for cocktails. Ever since I discovered you can buy the little one shots at BevMo/Total Wine, I love trying new cocktails. Having full sized bottles at my apartment is generally hard on my mornings and my wallet.
….mmmmmmmmaybe. I'm hesitant because I like my meatspace pursuits in meatspace. Drinking and IRC is the sort of thing I do when there's absolutely nothing else, the baby's asleep and my wife is off delivering babies. And I just inherited a PS3 with Wipeout HD on it.
Definitely in! I'm massively into beer and can give lots of advice on tasting, choices, and developing a palate, similarly for Scotch and whisky. Wine, however, outside port I'm useless. I simply find it all dulland for the life of me I ccan't find any difference from wine to wine.
Count me in for beer, where I am a snob and I shan't apologize. Beer is one of the few alcohols where there is a variety and a value in tasting, yet nothing is prohibitively expensive. Not even the scary stuff is above $50, whereas a bottle of wine can easily pass that. I would even like to offer the first suggestion for beer, something good yet available at any Whole Paycheck and near the $10 line. Would anyone object?
I'll definitely be watching this space even if I don't have the disposable income to play along.
Having a liquor cabinet or any stock what-so-ever is a really bad idea for me. Have fun everyone!
A bottle of wine I can handle. Sure. Let's get some big monster on the table and rip it to shreds :)
That's why I get the little pocket rockets from Total Wine now. You can get some of the higher end rums and whiskeys without having an entire bottle. It's the only reason I am still currently alive.
I think that's called a mickey up here in the Great White. There's something depressing about those things to me.
Nut up, mostly. Kidding. Learning to like whiskey is mainly a matter of finding one that you like. And in college, with what you're probably spending on whiskey, that's not very easy. In the inexpensive range, I would recommend Jim Beam Rye. It's nothing like their bourbon, but at not too much higher of a price. I have a very negative opinion of bourbon, in general. I think corn whiskey is basically shit. For inexpensive American whiskey, I'm all about rye (and for expensive American whiskey, too, actually). It lacks the sourness of bourbon, and has a much brighter flavor. Try it on ice, then drink it straight when you're more used to it. Good shit, I tell ya. Edit: There's a brand of rye called Redemption that I found while drinking with a few Hubski members one night. I thought, based on how delicious it was, that it was pricey. It isn't, but I can't find it by me. If you come across it in a liquor store, pick it up. You won't be disappointed.
I like that you've immediately made it in to a "challenge." by the way, I accept.
Hey now, nobody has ever called you a jock but the rest is true enough... I agree that it may be hard to manage. My guess is that it turns in to a hodgepodge of all of us drinking various things at once. But, maybe I'm wrong and it will work....
Really? Who claimed such things about you? They're obviously not very intelligible. Not true says I! What should we start with? I think wine, but what kind of wine?
Not important. Anyway, are you talking about a specific brand, or some broad variety? A specific brand will obviously be more interesting but also more difficult, since it means that only very widely available wines can be picked. Also, make sure that you're price conscious when coming up with ideas, because I assume that could be an issue in a lot of cases. I've been hitting the wine a lot harder than normal recently, because I started hanging out with a girl who has celiac, which makes beer and whiskey drinking impossible for her. I can't say I mind. It's about damn time I start to integrate more into my rotation.
I go through cycles and I'm actually in a wine phase. I love wine, a lot. I agree that choosing a specific varietal and region might be the best call for ease. Not all wines are available everywhere. We should also pick a price point, I think that between 10 and $20 will make it approachable for everyone. Varietal -Pinot Noir?
State - Oregon? I'll head to the wine store today and see what's what. How does that sound though for our first varietal and region?
I am not one to do much other than make a face after I sip whiskey and I am somewhat mediocre on beer - but learning - however assuming the hours were reasonable, I would try to participate in this. I do tend to put back a bottle of wine in one go though.
