For a second, I was confused by your title, as I thought you were saying that there was a famous book that has every state in America as the setting. Still cool though.

It's a bad title. I wasn't sure how to say it.

The most famous book that takes place in each US state.

"Each state as a setting for its most famous book." ? Flip it around - seems to work. Still wonky. Back to: "The most famous books set in each (not every) US state."

The most famous book that takes place in each US state.
That can still be interpreted as a book that takes place in every US state, and that is the most famous of that kind (of taking place in every US state).

Yeah, how would you say that? Hmmm. Maybe something like, "For every state, a book that takes place in it"...? Too awkward... I don't know. English is screwed up. In a programming language, I would express it like: http://play.golang.org/p/_07_RihlNa.

Ha! Briefly I get a window into the mind of a programmer. Wonderful.
