Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven came out this week, which I was stoked for. It exceeded the already high expectations I had following Replica. Dan Lopatin is a crazy talented producer. I can't find any videos of this song, but Young Presidents by Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin might be one of the catchiest songs I've heard so far this year. This song has been on my repeat for the entire past week.
I meant to mention R Plus Seven in my own post, good call. The way he turns samples of human voices into something entirely different is spectacular. He's incredibly talented.
From a somewhat recent playlist I made for a Mars Volta fan. * Amrita * Circa Survive * Hrvrd * Minus The Bear * Portugal. The Man * Rx Bandits
Yo yo yo yo yo BrainBurner they're playing in Rochester with Dowsing this month and I am so prepared to go to that concert. I'm giddy over it.
Lucky! When I originally saw the dates they had a tentative date set for Buffalo... but I guess the switched it to Rochester! Ah well, tell me how it is if you can!
I've been revisiting some stuff this week I haven't listened to a while:
Danny Brown - Side B. The whole album, really, but Rustie's production of this song is so great I figured I'd post this one. Robb Bank$ - On Me. New tape Tha City, tons of great production from Spaceghostpurrp and Nuri. Darkside - Golden Arrow. Collab between house or I guess deep house or something artist Nico Jaar and a really talented multi-instrumentalist Dave Harrington. Tim Hecker - Virginal II. Ambient drone music, dunno if anyone else likes this kind of music, but Hecker's album from 2011 is probably one of my favorites ever. Tallest Man On Earth - 1904. Great fall music, really great contemporary folk artist. Can sound a lot like Dylan sometimes but not always. Probably my favorite folk artist.
I'd advise The Dreamer, it really stands out. Also be sure to check out his KEXP appearance.
If you liked that one, I'd start the album that it's from - There's No Leaving Now, his newest. If you like that, then listen to The Wild Hunt. He doesn't have too much after that I don't think, so you could just listen to anything else you can find once you've heard those two.
Right, I've been waiting for this thread. Hymie's Basement - 21st Century Pop Song Why? - Bitter Thoughts These are both the bands of Yoni Wolf, the lead singer. He described it as "a thinking man’s melodic hip hop record.", but I prefer to think of it as a set of albums based on confessions in a church. It's definitely pleasing to listen to, but it's also a little disquieting, and I like that in a record. Scrimshire - Convergent I went to see Zoe Keating in concert in London and Scrimshire were supporting. Their tracks are free on their website and their female vocalist (Who I confess I can't remember the name of) had such a stunning voice that she didn't really need the microphone to be heard throughout the entire building. Eyedea & Abilities - Smile Eyedea is simply an amazing rapper. His freestyles are solid and don't feel prepared, his written music is witty and technically proficient.
I love Yoni Wolf, but he's one of those guys that I would never try to turn anyone onto. Lyrics like "All American male product shelf life agony. Masturbate your birthday party. If you're lonely get a labotomy" aren't exactly digestible to most people. But I'm totally into it.
You mean "Sucking dick for drink tickets/ at the free bar at your cousin's bat mitzvah/" or a song about stalking a girl on your fixie isn't what everyone listens to on the way home? I agree. I would feel slightly odd trying to get some of my friends into his music, but I like the realism. It's like the weird kid who masturbated at the back of science class grew up, became more verbose, and wrote an album about his life. I don't know if I'd want to hang out with him but I don't think I can stop listening.
Finally, Google Music has been launched here, so I'm going through a lot of my library again. Andrew Bird, for example. Regarding new music: Big Black Delta - Money Rain Down: great use of saxophone Coldplay - Atlas: due to last week's post
I've been listening to a lot of Andrew Bird the last couple days. I think I generally go through 1-2 AB kicks a year. My favorite album of his is Armchair Apocrypha, which seems to be his most unpopular among a lot of his fans. I think it was just because Plasticities was the first song of his that I heard, so AA was the first album I listened to.
London Grammar - Hey Now Started listening to their album -- can't put it down. Beautiful vocals.
Everybody has probably heard Royals by Lorde by now, but I still can't get enough of her. I love her style and voice and her album is really solid. Pretty much every song would fit nicely on an episode of Skins or in a cute indie film about a poor kid in the city.
Lately Vampire Weekend, Mother Mother, Young the Giant, and Say Anything.
Into the Sunset - Forsaken feat. Mr. Jo or anything off Worth the Weight.
"pop" pic this week: Pre-Raphaelites - foley Mountain Jazz pic this week: Bill evans Trio ( Isreals and Bunker) - "Someday My Prince Will come" I'm a sucker for jazz waltz classical pic this week: Joel Quarrington plays "Garden Scene" from "Much Ado About Nothing" by Erich Korngold disregard the long name, just enjoy the music
I've been really into Me Like Bees lately. They are a little bit like Jack White, Modest Mouse, and a tiny bit like Cage the Elephant (or at least I think so) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqMb-CT48Yo -Ra Ra Etc. Also the Raconteurs have entered my life and I don't see them leaving it anytime soon. I love their sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJ89GcR-gGY -Together http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkD-xIUYPq8 -Steady as she goes
As I mentioned in the last thread, I've been checking out Eri Kitamura's stuff. I didn't find much of interest, unfortunately. But I do like the tracks Re;Story, Baby Butterfly, and Yes. In terms of other stuff, I recently discovered ska. My discovery kind of went: Shakalabbits to Yum!Yum!Orange and then finally to bands like Streetlight Manifesto. It's been quite a journey, but I'm happy to say I found another genre I like. I'm now digging into various ska bands. I'll probably be posting some of them that I like in next week's thread.
Pillar Point - Diamond Mine (Generationals Deep Dark Ocean Remix) Swick & Lewis Cancut - Music For Birds Iv been listening to heaps of Djemba Djemba for some reason. I still cant get enough of this song haha BANKS - Fall Over (Djemba Djemba Remix). I think I like him so much because he kinda sounds like Flume but with more bass. Laura Mvula - Green Gardens (Djemba Djemba Remix). And then I have been listening to a lot of Team Supreme. They are just a bunch of artists that get together to make some quality stuff. I recommend checking them out. Oh and since the leaves are starting to change I recommend you guys check out Middle Brother. Perfect fall music :) Middle Brother - Million Dollar Bill
