We've taken a bit of a pummeling in the last few hours, and Hubski is running in a light mode while we get a handle on things. As a result, post lists may seem shallower than normal.
Welcome AskRedditors.
UPDATE: I'm awake. forwardslash is 3 hours later, so maybe he is eating cereal. We will do our best to respond to all comments/questions as we can. Thanks!
Oh my. Data needs no sleep, but I do. Welcome to all the new users, and thanks for the exercise! We will be spending the next few days adjusting, and getting things into tip top shape. I look forward to chatting more and troubleshooting a bit less. Welcome to Hubski.
I'm super curious as to the setup behind the URL. I work in web infrastructure and host numerous websites for automated bank processing. Just curious, is there any information anywhere about how Hubski runs and what you guys are using as far as servers/loadbalancers/solutions used? I've heard you talk about the Hubski infrastructure in bits and pieces over the place, but never seen the big picture. Mostly just curious about how many servers you have any their roles and how it's kind of logically separated. I understand if there isn't any information you feel like handing out. I'm just curious. :)
ATM it feels like we are running on hamster wheels. :) I'll share some stuff when I have a bit of time. The short story is that we are running an Arc server (one machine) behind an nginx reverse proxy. Hacker News pulls it off (mostly), and we are learning how. Our quickest fix since the influx was to drastically reduce data in memory, and resize. Now we are doing more targeted things.
Yeah, I believe that this effect is called the "reddit hug of death" it happens every now and again. Lucky/unlucky you guys!
There is no number that judges a quality of a user. Badges are given to users, by users to call out exceptional content: http://hubski.com/badgesubs
It's exactly the system I've wanted for Reddit: You have a limited supply of "upvotes" to give out
Honestly, I think the karmawhores will leave after they realize there's no quantifier for "success". After browsing around for a bit, the closest thing I could find to karma is that little number underneith my name, or maybe those small circles in the hubwheel. Also, the differences in how the two sites work will deter karmawhores as well. At least, that's what I hope. Edit: Just realized the number under my name is the number of followers I have. I feel dumb.
Edit 2: I just realized further that the number is underneath my name due to a formatting error. dumb x 2.
If you have any questions about the site, definitely let me know. Welcome Kaftke.Honestly, I think the karmawhores will leave after they realize there's no quantifier for "success".
Good. First and foremost, Hubski is a place to share ideas and information. It's not for the garnering of fake internet points. Still, once you've been on the site for a while, you will notice that the "hub-wheel" beside your name will being to populate. Once it makes a full rotation, you will be able to give a "badge" and you will be able to administer community tags.
The other beautiful part is that if somebody is blatantly posting for the sake of gaining followers or to fill up their hubwheel, it's very to ignore them. You can also ignore domains which is a nice feature. It's easy to find an enclave of Hubski that you like and stick to it. Occasionally venturing out on those cloudy days when you feel like seeing some new and different content if you so choose.
We have no karma. But we do have "zen". Check your settings.
I does look like a gear doesn't it. It's actually a spin on a lotus flower. As in 'Zen'. Get it? I'm going to try and adjust it in a day or so and see if it'll scale. With the Zen setting, there aren't any numbers associated with your feed. No count of followers, or badges, or even shares - hence the obsolescence of the hubwheel feature.
You should post your whole process. It is so gorgeous when you look at it like that.
Ah, some kind of a "neutral" stage? Oh, by the way, when I click in one of the flowers (be it the default "gray" one or the blue one), it changes and shows the "broken picture" icon. Like this:
Hey coloicito. Seems to be working now. Few things though: When you click reply or submit there is a little mark-up button beside the text box. Have a look at that. It'll show you how to bold and underline things, give shout-outs, and also what file types can be embedded. If you find any more bugs and what-not, you can shout out to mk, or post with the tag 'bugski'. Welcome to Hubski :)
Thanks, mate! I like it so far, the dark style's pretty good, and this seems the perfect place to find intelligent discussion (rather than pun-threads and what not). By the way, maybe it was because I was using an iMac (10.6.8 IIRC). I'm on Linux right now and it works. I'll try it again in Mac OS X and I'll tell you. Also, is there any tag to post suggestions with? Or shall I message you instead?
Message me? Hells no. I can't even believe myself that anyone listens to me around here :) The best thing to do, IMO, is just post a suggestion as a submittal which will typically generate some conversation around the issue. Pros and cons and what-not. You can also shoutout to thenewgreen, mk, b_b, and insomniasexx. They sit at the cool lunch table together.
Let's see how thenewgreen answers this one, because I'm not even sure what a mod is exactly.
b_b covered it. You, the user are the moderators of your own experience. You can follow and unfollow people, tags, and domains. You can also ignore tags and people that you would rather not be included in your feed. Beyond that, you can mute users that you'd rather not have see/comment on your own posts. I hope that helps coloicito. Feel free to "shout out" to myself, insomniasexx or b_b for any future questions. Probably best to let mk and forwardslash focus on site maintenance right now. I'm bouncing around on planes all day, but I will be sure to get back to you or anyone else when able. Welcome to Hubski!
This is slightly off-topic (it's actually a question), but, a few days ago I submitted a link to reddit about a demonstration where 10%~ of the total population of the island went to (100k~ ). Also, there's an "end-less" teachers strike going on too, with a "resistance box" (to cover what those teachers loose for going on a strike) that already has 300k€ + a Miro painting (10k). It was absolutely ignored by reddit (+2), probably because it happened in a rather-stranded island that barely anyone in the US knows (Mallorca, Spain). IMO it's a big deal (you don't see the 10% of the total population of a region going to a single demonstration too often, it would be like seeing 837M~ in NY) as well as demonstrating how a society can unite towards a single end (the 300K~€ in that "box" + the Miro painting [donated by one of Miro's heirs]), so it was weird to see reddit ignoring it. I guess it would be okay to post it here (if I can get google to translate it to english, goddamnit!), right? (tags being... #news and #eupolitics, maybe?)
This is one of my favorite recently added features. I should really use it more often...and that does look like a gear now that you mention it.
I posted some graphs here so you can see the explosive growth over the past 12 hours or so. In super specific techy terms, a metric buttload of traffic.
New user here as well. Hopefully I can bring the best of what brought me to reddit ~6 years ago.
That's one thing that sneaks up on you. If you stick around long enough, you begin to recognize usernames and know personality traits and interests of the people behind those usernames! It's a bit odd at first but really nice as well. It really helps with the community feel.
Yeah! I'm pretty excited to be honest. It feels a lot more like the boards/forums I used to go on years ago, moreso than reddit anyway, or even a bit like livejournal? Idk though, I shouldn't be making comparisons... I should judge it on its own merits. Things are looking positive though! :)
Make sure you guys check out your settings! We have different color themes and you can edit your notifications and turn feed times on and off and even check out Hubski Zen which is pretty cool. Also, I send out a weekly Hubski Newsletter if you want to stay updated with the best posts without completely transitioning over from reddit. Let us know if you have any questions. I think the team will be up for a while. Welcome!
With enough money? Probably. When spikes like this happen we have to manually alter things like our VM RAM allocation. Ideally we'd be all hip and cool with automatically scaling ec2 images, load balancing front ends (built in some exotic javascript transcompiler), and heavily cached by way of a CDN. Unfortunately we run on an experimental dialect of lisp and don't have any revenue streams yet, so our options are a bit limited.
If you go the way of ads for revenue, please keep them unobtrusive
We've talked a lot about what we would hypothetically want and not want with ads. Unobtrusive is high on the list. That list is so long that I think we're a long way off from doing ads. Our highest priority isn't money though...or even growth. It's to give people a place online where they can escape the vitriol of comment sections, the low-fi content overwhelming reddit, and engage in thoughtful and civil discussions.
There are no sections or 'subreddits' if you will on Hubksi. The closest thing are tags which you can also follow besides people. Thankfully, users can click on any tag they see and block it so they never have to see content they don't want, even if they otherwise enjoy the rest of the content of a poster that they follow.
Ah no worries :) If you really want to break out of the karma-loop turn on 'Zen' mode in your Hubski settings. It removes information about the number of votes posts and comments have received, as well as hides things like the number of followers you have etc. The skin is designed to just let you focus on the content without the social popularity cues ;) But you may want to start off with regular old Hubski first for a while before you get all crazy.
What's funny is that as I'm doing stuff I'm have Tea. Earl Grey. Hot. Also soon I'll have the hairline of Picard. That may have been funnier in my cold-medicine-ridden mind.
Do you ever do Chamomile tea with a blast of real lemon and sweetened with honey? It is my ultimate tea brew when I'm feeling sick. Although recently, I got called out on it by an Englishman who said it was a 'grandma's drink.' You know when you're getting called out on your tea by an Englishman you're doing it wrong...
I haven't tried Chamomile tea, no, and I don't usually take anything in my tea. I only recently started exploring outside black teas, partially so I could have a cup before bed without worrying about the caffeine keeping me up.
When I saw the site down, I was so worried that you would still be equipped with the half-working mind you had Monday. Good thing you seem to be on the mend.
In a better headspace for sure, but still hacking up a lung.
