I can absolutely relate on the small talent pool problem. I'm part of a startup located in a college town. The university is pretty good, and has some pretty good Computer Science/Computer Engineering classes, but most of the students are not going to be great employees from the start.

It seems there is a whole trend of universities trying to get their students to be great interviewees so that they can work for the Googles and Facebooks of today. The kids will know the theory of the fundamentals(complexity, general OOP design, information theory), but will lack any skill to work on real projects.

Whenever I interview a potential employee that's still a student I notice the trend of students not really being ready to work, but rather the students being ready to go through more training at a company. It's like the 4 years of university are barely enough to get them to write a hello world in Java or a merge sort in Python from memory and fake their way through pseudo code of a Red-Black Tree, and then some big name company will pick them up and finish their training while having them work on a fancy button or keyboard shortcut on a page.

I am really interested about service oriented architecture. It seems especially useful for my current project use case. Implementing an analytics API for the customer will be served via JSON to a mobile app and a client that pulls json from the website will be really clean.

It's crazy how you're doing so much yourself. What do you do at your pay-the-bills job? You seem to be an excellent developer.

I couldn't agree more. Every time I have a quetsion or a suggestion, I know that mk is lurking in the corners of Hubski, ready to be extremely helpful.

EDIT: Still waiting for an API <3 Even a simple JSON one to get posts and comments would be great.

It's official. Football has been renamed to SOCCER forever!

Hey, just saw that you posted this, sorry that I posted after you without checking!

I think this will cause a decent amount of drama, if anything this will at least make some admins try to look for new jobs or ask for a change in management.

If they can't create all of the tools necessary for mods to, well, be mods, then the admins should at least make a blog post that explains what else they are working on, or get some developers that can listen to the community.

ll  ·  3436 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: "Just" say no

It seems like the need for using the word "just" comes from the fact that the US has a culture of not offending others, and because people have a hard time divorcing their work from their worth as a person.

It's hard not to do it, too. I can be looking at code from a coworker, and I can't just say "Hey, this method sucks, can you redo so that [reasons]" because it will be a hostile work environment. Instead I would have to go in a roundabout way and say something like "Hey, for this method, wouldn't it be better to have it do x instead of z".

Or when trying to set up a meeting with someone you want to impress, like I'm a startup founder and the person is a potential investor, I will want to use softer words and suck up to the person a little. I can't say "Hey, I'm flying to SF on Tuesday to meet you", I would have to say "Hey, I'll be in SF on Tuesday, would you be able to meet?".

I don't necessarily think it's bad, it's just how people navigate through the accepted behavior of our time/country/industry/office.

I imagine reitirng for a regional governor might be hard, leaving the country would be even harder. But it's just a dog eat dog world out there, and the less fortunate are going to have to pick up the pieces of a bursted bubble.

ll  ·  3438 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: China steps up support to arrest stock market slide

I'm really concerned about the pension funds. All foreign actors will remove their money from the Chinese markets, and the pension funds will be forced to buy up a lot of it, i'm sure. This is going to be the opposite of hedging your position, and if something goes wrong, people will lose their pensions.

I hope that this won't cause civil unrest in China.

Oh boy. Scalia... That guy should've been a drama writer, but obviously you make a lot more money from supporting things like Citizens United and trying to ban abortion.

He always falls behind really smart and important rhetoric and calls towards the spirit of the writers of the constitution and what the people of the time perceived to be true, but when it's something that his super-religious-self cares about, he suddenly forgets all of the spirit of the writers of the Constitution.

It's so easy to dislike that guy...

ll  ·  3439 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: FINLAND: New Government Commits to a Basic Income Experiment

The general assumption here is that the people receiving basic income do not become lazy good-for-nothing people who refuse to pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

From what I understand, a basic income is supposed to try and soften the harshness of a global economy where there are fewer jobs as more and more jobs are being automated away.

For example, when a factory worker gets laid off, the worker has to apply for unemployment and then wait to receive checks. With basic income the factory worker has been receiving money already so the worker doesn't have to deal with a beurecratic organization like an (un)employment office. The worker will have enough money to survive, and it will be a net preventing the worker from falling into a vicious cycle of homelessnes and so on.

A person that has had a well paying job will not really care for a measly $500 or so a month, and they would probably just spend it on entertainment or some other services anyway, which is good for the economy.

Back of the envelope calculations: The richer person will have an additional $6,000 a year, which(assuming they make $60,000 a year already) is an increase of 10%, which is not that big. A factory worker who makes $20,000 will have the extra $6,000 a year which mill be a 30% increase in what they make. That will definitely easy the burden off of the factory worker, and if the worker loses a job, he still has at least $6,000 a year to survive off of.

I imagine replacing expensive and inefficient food stamp projects with a simpler government -> persons bank account deposit would end up saving a lot of money, too.

ll  ·  3439 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Next Few Days Have the Potential to Transform Greece and Europe

The Greek people voting is what put the politicians that have caused this mess in power. Any common citizen will be inclined towards a populist politician in the 80s and 90s who will promise them better pensions and easier lives.

Now, after years of a whole society blaming the Troika of their struggles, they have the option to either vote to accept a bailout and have more austerity, or vote to stick it to the banks and Europe. I have a feeling a lot of people will use this opportunity as a way to stick it to the man.

Also, I can't believe how short sighted some people are about the current situation. Yes it sucks, and yes the IMF and Germany aren't being super helpful, but it's not like they put Greece in that position in the first place. And German politicians have their own constituency to be responsible too. This is a culmination of decades of bad policy and mismanagement of a country by politicians who have failed to enact any meaningful reform, but the evil IMF is the one at fault here. Oh boy :(

I am so glad that my home country has not abused the advantage of lower interest rates on loans now that they are also an Eurozone member. I would hate to have to try and explain to my grandfather why voting for that guy who is promising to cut taxes and increase pensions is a bad idea.

ll  ·  3446 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Free Code Camp's Learn to Code Blog: So Yeah We Tried Slack... and We Deeply Regretted It

Seems like they misunderstood Slack itself. Sure it's expensive, but it comes with all of the integrations and capabilities that gitchat doesn't have.

I use slack at work and we have about 9 people on it, it's great for that, and it's not as expensive. I use the free tier for a private group between me and my wife, and it works great then too. And since it's so easy to work with, I have a hubot that the wife and I use to plan things out, set reminders, talk during the day, and to share funny pictures.

Why won't they just use a self-hosted IRC server if they are concerned about cost? A $50/mo VPS with some configuration would handle a lot of students pretty easily.

ll  ·  3457 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are you working on today?

Ha, I've already been getting job offers and requests for interviews from local companies, and my linkedin is blowing up with big company recruiters messaging me.

Honestly it makes me feel a little good about myself, especially since I know that with all this interest in me the wife and I won't go hungry. As of right now the only person that is worried about the startup failing is the CEO, since he is a business/finance guy, and there is a smaller demand for that.

Makes me wonder how many startup founders that are business people get laid off after a startup gets acqui-hired for the tech talent.

I'm part of a startup, so every day is a pretty big grind to work on our system. It's really enjoyable though, and the skills I'm learning are making me extremely employable in case the startup doesn't work out!

There is one universe where there were at least wo people writing in it. It was hard to keep track of it sometimes, especially since the only way to track posts is by a users submitted list.

Can't wait for the API!

ll  ·  3458 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Reddit changes community guideliness, bans subreddits.

One thing that I really miss is having a way to aggregate posts from writers and condence them into longer texts. Right now the community volunteers are working on an archive that is a separate website where you can see all of the posts of a story in one place, but they are facing issues with that.

They still want people to visit the subreddit to upvote and comment on the stories to show appreciation for the stories, but the reddit API is a little awkward at that. There is no good way of documenting the universes from the stories expect for Wiki pages. Also the only way to find stories from a universe is to search through a user or the wiki. There are no tags or anything even remotely functional in reddit itself.

I would love to see support for something like following a tag that is the universe and a story sequence. Something like #jenkinsverse for the universe and #billybob for the story. I could then look at my feed and see the stories from those tags whenver they get posted. Maybe I could even have a way to trigger a daily digest of the stories from a tag that would be emailed/pushbulleted/IFTTT/sent to my kindle. Also there is no way to financially help out the writers. One or two of them set up a Patreon account and help, but there is no way to make that built into the subreddit without some crazy CSS magic.

Honestly, if Hubski would like to bring back some of the features for writers, I definitely recommend the subreddit /r/shutupandwrite and it's creator, awk(or awkisopen). He has built an incredible feedback system that ties in the subreddit and IRC to create a way for writers to improve.

EDIT: Sorry for the word vomit, I accidentally took 2 caffeine pills instead of my vitamins. send help

My favorite subreddit is reddit.com/r/hfy I would love to see them move to here. Maybe if Hubski had some extra features that they need they would come here.

Hi,

Not to come off as an asshole, but the 2013 Mac Air actually has an SSD. What's even more cool is that the SSDs used in the Mac Airs use a PCIe slot. Most SSDs now are still connected over SATA which is what almost all HDDs are connected too.

I am really excited that Apple went ahead and included a PCIe SSD card. Hopefully the rest of the industry will follow and we will all have smaller laptops pretty soon! PCIe slot SSDs are already used for very high performance tasks. For example this is using a PCIe slot and it's incredibly fast.
