Anything in excess is a bad idea. This is why they should be careful when releasing something new in the atmosphere because more often than not, these new technology/chemicals, etc. will bite us in the ass and might be worst for all us here in on earth.

krmatthews  ·  2191 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: For Hackers, Anonymity Was Once Critical. That’s Changing.

Exactly. And with everything that's going on, the government should hire a kickass hacker to man the cybersecurity department. If a group of Chinese hackers managed to infiltrate US companies that easily, then what better way to combat them than with your own team of hackers. Especially with China on the brink of starting all out war should things didn't go their way, we could be sitting ducks once China starts attacking... and I don't think Japan will survive either.

Can't say I feel sorry for the guy. If s/he commits a crime, s/he should be punished. Whether it's being hoisted up in the air face down using a flying motorbike as they fly to the station, or just being dragged a few feet up, just should be served. I hope they make it ugly and hard for those criminals.

Yeah, and you know what the worst thing about that is? It's that those affected families will probably accept Musk's dirty money because they have nothing. If Elon Musk wrote them a check with an impressive amount for the damage his project caused to their homes and livelihood, they will probably take it, even if they will have a hard time looking for a place to relocate in that costs less or within the given check's price range. Meanwhile, Elon Musk and his followers will continue ruining other families' lives for his futuristic technology.

I think a hacker would be more qualified to head cybersecurity team than someone who has never used a computer once in his life, right? cough-Japanese-new-cybersecurity-minister-cough. I wonder how long it will take for them to hack into Japan's system? It probably won't take them that long.

Or it has a whip attached to it that will detain someone until the backup arrives. But stringing them up in the air by the ankles is fun, too. Now that would be a sight to see, especially if the hands are tied, too. Hopefully, the criminal doesn't have a fear of heights or he'd be soaked in vomit when they arrived at the police station.

krmatthews  ·  2199 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: When Elon Musk Tunnels Under Your Home

Elon Musk's plan is great, but I really hope that it won't affect the families living above ground once they start drilling down there, or another natural disaster happens. And I'm sure he's got money to burn, but I hope that he has enough billions to help the families that will be affected because of this futuristic technology.

Excuse me?

krmatthews  ·  2199 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Climate change and farming: 'Unpredictability is here to stay'

Unpredictability like it's sunny now but will rain later, I think we can handle, but just how unpredictable are they talking about? Do we have to prepare for hotter summer every year? Colder winter? More terrible flooding, storms and hurricanes? If it's the latter then that's bad, and I'm not sure how much longer we can survive the next big natural disaster.

krmatthews  ·  2199 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Suicide Increasing Among American Workers

See, this is why introducing a smart AI could be a bad idea in the future. If people are committing suicide now due to unemployment, how much more do you think the suicide rate will increase once there are ASI robots that will practically replace human workers? We can't compete with them, how are we supposed to survive with smart AI and automation?

krmatthews  ·  2205 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Antiobiotics for appendicitis

Although this is good, this could "inspire" people to just take antibiotics when they have appendicitis. Although yes, you can't just buy antibiotics that easily, for those who have it lying around in their home, this could be dangerous. If you have appendicitis, don't self-medicate! Go to the doctor asap!

krmatthews  ·  2205 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: David Byrne: Eliminating the Human

Yeah, no. Unless automation can turn itself on and off, fix themselves when they have a problem with their machine, or upgrade their system, they will need engineers and coders FOREVER. Also, didn't Byrne realize that when automation replaced ALL humans, then we would have a very big problem? Does this not bother him at all? Guess not.

And people still wonder why we're not so keen on buying our own home and instead choose to rent. With all the things we need to pay, plus rent and other bills, this will really get you down, you know? Working two jobs sometimes are still not enough!

krmatthews  ·  2205 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Deepfake Videos are Getting Real, and that's a Problem

But how exactly are they going to end fake videos? They're like an immortal beings, you know. They're like HYDRA; you cut off one head and two shall take its place. It's nice Twitter are doing something about it but is it enough?

krmatthews  ·  2210 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What Happens When Abortion Is Banned?

Hold on. Forget about the women and the doctor for one second, and let's talk about the child. If abortion is banned then that means that every woman who will get pregnant will have to give birth to their child (unless the woman had a miscarriage). Everyday, hundreds if not thousands of women give birth to a baby. If abortion is banned then the country will have some serious overpopulation problem. Also, what about the father? Why should it be just the doctor and the mother who will be prosecuted? Isn't he at fault, too?

Agreed. After all, YOLO so they gotta just do it before they're too old and weak to even get up. I just hope they didn't ground them for sneaking out.

krmatthews  ·  2210 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Addiction Doesn’t Always Last a Lifetime

I agree. With proper treatment and therapy, addiction can be overcome, regardless of what it is. I think it's only a matter of finding the right treatment for it. Do you know that there are therapists who uses virtual reality now to treat patients battling with addiction? It's not the alternative to medication, of course, but it's being used to help them get better, along with their pills. What do you think about it?

krmatthews  ·  2211 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: China to bar people with bad 'social credit' from planes, trains

Holy shit! This is straight up a scene from Black Mirror! China really is being serious about their technology up there, aren't they? I just hope they won't take this worldwide because it won't be good for everyone. I mean, would you be okay if someone bans you from traveling just because you have a bad "social credit" ratings? That's ridiculous!

krmatthews  ·  2211 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Trump administration sees a 7-degree rise in global temperatures by 2100

Can you imagine how depressing it must be if, in ten years, you're still alive to witness the climate changing and the world ending? You survived 10 more years, only to die with the rest of the world. Goddammit.

krmatthews  ·  2211 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: I expect to die during the Great Migration

I don't doubt this is going to happen, too. But my concern is what if there are those who keep the migrants from crossing the border to prevent further damage in? What if they keep them out because they would fear these people will bring illnesses to the locals? I hope you're wrong but as days go by, and judging by the way climate is changing these days, it's sad to admit you could be right.

Unfortunately, that may mean that certain individuals may have the privilege of seeing exactly what a person's score is. Usually utopian aspiring technology seems dystopian.

This is just going to divide us even more. As if racism, sexism, and the division between the rich and the poor aren't a big problem already, they're taking a page out of a TV show, too. I get how this could be used to move us forward, but it could very well be our downfall, too.

Yes, but do we really need this social credit system to force us to be "nice"? What this will do is suppress rage and anger, and suppressed rage and anger can lead to hate crime or something. The nation's situation is already bad as it is, are we really willing to risk that for this technology?

krmatthews  ·  2214 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Fashion faux pas as microplastics are traced to synthetic textiles

It would be nice if clothing and accessories manufacturers will start looking for an eco-friendly way to produce apparels, however, the problem only a very small fraction of the fashion industry, as well as the others, are willing to shed their old ways and opt for a better one, right?

Not if you saw Black Mirror's "Nosedive" episode. This is going to force people to be nice just for the sake of getting high social credit scores even even though deep down they already want to punch that person in the face. Either that, or you suffer consequence. And honestly, what exactly is the purpose of this anyway?

krmatthews  ·  2217 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What would the world look like if we took online threats seriously?

Well, that too, of course! But really, if we take online threats seriously, the FBI hotline will be busy all the time. And they better have a great tech team to detect IP addresses and all that because these days, it's so easy to mask your IP and troll someone online.

"It actually tells me how long I'm on hubski on my phone"

Basically this. I don't have kids myself, but I use Screen Time because it lets me see how long I spent on my phone procrastinating. As someone who works from home, this app is especially useful to me. I didn't set a time limit, but maybe I should lol.

krmatthews  ·  2220 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Climate Change Means One World's Death and Another's Birth | WIRED

Well, I think this is possible. That said, if and when the planet collapses, I don't think we'd be able to survive the fall. Earth may survive, but we sure can't say the same for its inhabitants, humans or not. If only there's a way for us to move to a different planet or a different world or something.

krmatthews  ·  2220 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Exercising too much could worsen mental health, study suggests (N=1.2M)

To be fair, it says "too much" exercising. The article was kinda dumb to be honest. Everything that is too much is really bad for your health. If you exercise for 1-12 hours daily I don't think it should have a bad effect on your health. I work out 1 hour for 5 days. I think we're safe.

krmatthews  ·  2220 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: A list of practical things technologists can do about climate change, TODAY.

I agree with this. I don't know if we can completely stop climate change from worsening, but technology can definitely help alleviate it, and technologists do have resources to do it. It's all just a matter of how they execute it and how willing they are to help.

krmatthews  ·  2223 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What would the world look like if we took online threats seriously?

"I expect police and FBI would be swamped by constant bullshit."

Exactly this. If we take online threats seriously all the time, not only what you said will definitely happen, there will also be a lot of paranoid users and trolls. But if this happens, the cyber crime law will also become one of the most important laws that will exist.
