Picking just one seemed a tragedy. On knowledge, creativity, and connecting the dots:
[...] Science is not built to increase either the “truthfulness” or the total volume of information. It is designed to increase the order and organization of knowledge we generate about the world. These three ideas changed the whole way I thought of the world. Science is not about discovering new facts, but connecting new observations to the web of existing knowledge. Creativity isn't invention—it's just connecting the dots. Design, science, writing, art—they're all just ways of gradually increasing the order and interconnectedness of human thought. Through that lens, it's no wonder that the internet accelerated nearly every sphere of human achievement: if you increase the ability for ideas to find each other, connect and combine—you accelerate everything. Most awe-inspiring quote of all time, however, goes to Carl Sagan. Goes with this image:
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. I don't follow this one. Does one have to read the book to understand?
There are a number of reasons that I love this passage, the ambiguity is certainly one of them.I tried to tell about the night and the difference between the night and the day and how the night was better unless the day was very clean and cold and I could not tell it; as I cannot tell it now
-I too have experienced this. I love the night time and I almost always enjoy the evenings more than the days, but his description of how some days can be very clean and cold makes sense to me. For me, these are the days when everything seems new and crisp. This resonates with me.He had always known what I did not know and what, when I learned it, I was always able to forget.
-This is one of my favorite Hemingway lines. There are so many things that are like this for me. Things that someone tries to get me to experience but I am unwilling or unable at the time, only later to experience them and truly enjoy them... only to forget or neglect them. -It's important to note that the character is speaking to a priest in this section of the book. It's early on in the novel so we are actually able to see the character develop to the point where he does "learn it" and we see him "forget it" as well. This is a major foreshadowing moment in what I think is one of the best books I've ever read. Just talking about it makes me want to read it again.

But a great artist — a master — and that is what Auguste Rodin was — can look at an old woman, portray her exactly as she is… and force the viewer to see the pretty girl she used to be…. and more than that, he can make anyone with the sensitivity of an armadillo, or even you, see that this lovely young girl is still alive, not old and ugly at all, but simply prisoned inside her ruined body. He can make you feel the quiet, endless tragedy that there was never a girl born who ever grew older than eighteen in her heart…. no matter what the merciless hours have done to her.
That is an amazing quote. I realize that the quote is bigger than just Rodin, but I was wondering if you know of any Rodin work that would fit this description literally. My understanding is that Rodin was primarily a sculptor and I can't recall any of his works that were of an a youthful woman trapped in an old woman's body. I'm no expert though, I'll go scour the Internet and see what I can find. Wonderful quote though, thank you for sharing.

This one is from Dear Esther and though I currently can't access my favorite quote from that game this is one of them. It's a rather sad story though, but it's a one hour game and I've played it for ten.I've begun my voyage in a paper boat without a bottom; I will fly to the moon in it. I have been folded along a crease in time, a weakness in the sheet of life, now you've settled on the opposite side of the paper to me. I can see your traces in the ink that soaks through the fiber, the pulped vegetation. As we become waterlogged and the cage disintegrates we will intermingle, and as this paper air plane leaves the cliff edge and carves parallel vapor trails in the dark, we will come together.

Why is programming fun? What delights may its practitioner expect as his reward?
First is the sheer joy of making things. As the child delights in his mud pie, so the adult enjoys building things, especially things of his own design. I think this delight must be an image of God's delight in making things, a delight shown in the distinctness and newness of each leaf and each snowflake. Second is the pleasure of making things that are useful to other people. Deep within, we want others to use our work and to find it helpful. In this respect the programming system is not essentially different from the child's first clay pencil holder "for Daddy's office." Third is the fascination of fashioning complex puzzle-like objects of interlocking moving parts and watching them work in subtle cycles, playing out the consequences of principles built in from the beginning. The programmed computer has all the fascination of the pinball machine or the jukebox mechanism, carried to the ultimate. Fourth is the joy of always learning, which springs from the nonrepeating nature of the task. In one way or another the problem is ever new, and its solver learns something: sometimes practical, sometimes theoretical, and sometimes both. Finally, there is the delight of working in such a tractable medium. The programmer, like the poet, works only slightly removed from pure thought-stuff. He builds his castles in the air, from air, creating by exertion of the imagination. Few media of creation are so flexible, so easy to polish and rework, so readily capable of realizing grand conceptual structures. (As we shall see later, this very tractability has its own problems.) The Woes of the Craft Not all is delight, however, and knowing the inherent woes makes it easier to bear them when they appear. First, one must perform perfectly. The computer resembles the magic of legend in this respect, too. If one character, one pause, of the incantation is not strictly in proper form, the magic doesn't work. Human beings are not accustomed to being perfect, and few areas of human activity demand it. Adjusting to the requirement for perfection is, I think, the most difficult part of learning to program. Next, other people set one's objectives, provide one's resources, and furnish one's information. One rarely controls the circumstances of his work, or even its goal. In management terms, one's authority is not sufficient for his responsibility. In practice, actual (as opposed to formal) authority is acquired from the very momentum of accomplishment.
The dependence upon others has a particular case that is especially painful for the system programmer. He depends upon other people's programs. These are often maldesigned, poorly implemented, incompletely delivered (no source code or test case), and poorly documented. So he must spend hours studying and fixing things that in an ideal world would be complete, available, and usable. The next woe is that designing grand concepts is fun; finding nitty little bugs is just work. With any creative activity come dreary hours of tedious, painstaking labor, and programming is no exception. Next, one finds that debugging has a linear convergence, or worse, where one somehow expects a quadratic sort of approach to the end. So testing drags on and on, the last difficult bugs taking more time to find than the first. The last woe, and sometimes the last straw, is that the product over which one has labored so long appears to be obsolete upon (or before) completion. Already colleagues and competitors are in hot pursuit of new and better ideas. Already the displacement of one's thought-child is not only conceived, but scheduled. This always seems worse than it really is. The new and better product is generally not available when one completes his own; it is only talked about. It, too, will require months of development. The real tiger is never a match for the paper one, unless actual use is wanted. Then the virtues of reality have a satisfaction all their own. Of course the technological base on which one builds is always advancing. As soon as one freezes a design, it becomes obsolete in terms of its concepts. But implementation of real products demands phasing and quantizing. The obsolescence of an implementation must be measured against other existing implementations, not against unrealized concepts. The challenge and the mission are to find real solutions to real problems on actual schedules with available resources. This then is programming, both a tar pit in which many efforts have floundered and a creative activity with joys and woes all its own.
