A recent discussion led me to think of the nature of the soul.
I am (was?) one to believe in the logic of reincarnation. It'd make sense and follow principles of nature for nothing to be wasted. Therefore, the soul would move on to another being once it left ours.
However. Imagine the soul were like an organism that reproduced asexually. When a person takes in so much, they can't help but share that information with someone else. The same may be true of the soul. When the soul reaches it's carrying capacity, it must reproduce. What if its reproduction is the sharing of the content which made it full with others? If I were to read a book on Buddhist philosophy, I'd be compelled to share that information with someone else. In doing so, the nature in which I'd share my thoughts would be the act of my soul reproducing and filling up that soul of another.
If this were the case, then the notion of a final resting place for the soul (e.g. Heaven or Hell) may not be so far-fetched after all (as opposed to reincarnation). Once the original organism/soul had lived its life, it'd move on to a place of eternal slumber.
But I still can't shake the belief in reincarnation.
All of this may be hogwash. But if anything, it's food for thought.
What do you think/believe?
