In short, the MCCA pays for medical benefits from very serious auto injuries, those that go over $500k. Everyone with a car in Michigan pays into the fund. But, the fund's bookkeeping is secret. Now the MCAA is saying they don't have the money to continue to pay, but that no one needs to see their books, because we wouldn't understand them.
Although all insured auto-owners pay into the MCCA fund, the public is not privy to the assumptions made to determine the fee they pay each year. The insurance executives decide the amount and by law auto-owners pay it.
To me, this is insane. If you get public money to create a fund, the funds books should be public knowledge.
"Well, I think the people of Michigan are a lot smarter too. And I think if you would give us the information, then we could have an open discussion on it. I want to see the numbers and I don’t think that’s too much to ask.” -This seems at the root of the entire national debate right now. Whether you're a supporter of the left, right, ows or the tea party, the general consensus is show me the numbers.
