An idea I had the other day, not sure if it's been suggested or discussed before: the notion of "editors" of sorts. Not necessarily people who curate content at all, but merely suggestions of people to follow for newcomers who regularly post/share quality content in certain tags: so you would have a few "news" editors, a few "politics" editors, et cetera.
Suggested "editors" wouldn't even necessarily have to be people: URLs could be listed. For example, I'm always pretty damn well satisfied with every post I find from medium.com.
The problem I see with this is the system becoming as problematic as the reddit subreddit system, not allowing for variation. That's why I think having them as pure suggestions would be interesting. Having them renew/update would be interesting, too - perhaps every few months, to avoid stagnation etc.
Thoughts?
I think it's a positive that the Hubski community is totally decentralized. If we introduced suggested content sources then we start to lose some of the diversity enabled by the current setup and start gaining all the problems that come from that. There's already a sort of unofficial version of this if you just look at the community tab.
Yeah, this is the big issue I see with the idea.
I've never heard of "editors" being mentioned before, or the concept of having people that suggest people to follow etc. I'm not sure I completely follow what your vision is. Can you elaborate? One thing is for sure, we are always attempting to make "discovery" of "content" and "users" better. We are currently working on improving the new user signup process. Any and all suggestions are most welcome. You've been a hubskier for quite some time now and I realize that "creating an account" is something you've likely not done for a while, but trust me... it could use improvement. I look forward to hearing more about your idea.
The way I see this forming is sort of a community-run "suggestions to follow" - so a list of popular, generic topics (news, politics, economics, technology, arts and culture etc) and under each category a few users and possibly a domain or two suggested by the users of hubski as a good place to start. Basically, a "if you are interested in x, try following a, b, or c as they regularly post that content". I guess when I phrase it like that it sounds a lot like the tag system already, though.
I'm not fulling seeing what you're suggesting. I'm sure this is a failing on my part and not yours though. What problem are you solving and what is the solution? I want to understand.
This sounds similar to the suggestions system on Twitter, is that what you're going for?
Sort of, yeah, but not necessarily generated by an algorithm, instead voted/chosen by the community.
