Labor unions, in the time since American manufacturing left "for good" in the 1980s, have seriously dropped the ball on unionizing the service industry. If we gave union protections to those working in retail, or the fast food industry, or what have you, my guess is that the additional money floating around the economy would have cushioned us out of this recession by at least two years. We really need to start restructuring our economy for this next wave of automations.

Revolutionary unions have put forth effort but of course they have limited resources in recent history. In fact this recent wave of fastfood strikes was started by IWW organizing delivery drivers a few years ago.
