I recall magazines (not Readers Digest) being more substantial as a kid. Sounds like they might well have been.

That was really interesting. I once got a fairly well-known guy involved in magazine publishing to admit on a recording that magazine publishing is now essentially ad space. Of course, he refused to let me use that part. It was for a magazine publishing project in university, but still, it wouldn't have been doing him any favors.
