Opportunity cost is the loss of potential gain from other alternatives when one alternative is chosen. When you think of the decisions you make on a daily basis, is there one that sucks up time but gives you very little in return? It could be watching TV, Facebook, sleeping in or even Hubski.
Can you think of one thing you could choose to eliminate and substitute with another choice that could positively impact your life?
There are so many creative endeavors that I wish I could find more time for. The realities of fatherhood, marriage, church, and occupation eat up most available minutes. And the few spare minutes left over are fragmented and not often useable time slots for that creativity. It is the decisions we make. Nothing "makes" me choose family, church, and work. I choose (or chose) those things. And some of those choices have lasting consequences and responsibilities. and I wish I had more time for hubski right now.
86 church. I kid, I kid. I have the same issues, I have so many things I want to create. One thing I think I can eliminate is watching TV series. I always have one going but lately I've had a couple. No more!
Forego the pew, find God in your artwork! Um.... especially the #tngpodcast's :-) Am I going to hell now?
There is no hell. Hell is on earth. Lighten your conscience and find God in life & your artwork. Go in Peace.
Thank you for the comment MarlaJames, I appreciate any reason to create artwork.
Man, I sure hope that is directed at the second part of my comment and not the first :)
I enjoy Hockey, but I've had to cut it out of my life except for the Stanley Cup playoffs. I just don't have time. Same goes for baseball, I really love the Detroit Tigers, but I don't have the time it takes to truly dedicate myself to following MLB. I suppose I will have to rely on flagamuffin to keep me posted. -Big baseball fan. What are the big 4 leagues? Hockey, baseball, basketball and football? I'm not sure where you live or it may be more obvious. That's the big 4 in the US, at least from where I sit.
In college I thought I wanted to give up sleep so that I could do everything I procrastinated doing during the day. I made a somewhat-fair trade off, in that I got all that work done. When enough time passed, though, I started hearing voices and having sleep-dep inspired hallucinations. I'll stick to sleep going forward now, thanks. (These days I get almost aggressive about it.)
Patton Oswalt does a bit on how becoming a father is like doing hallucinogens because you get no sleep and "trip."
All that stuff my housekeeper used to do: Laundry, cleaning the house, cleaning the dog, telling people I'm not available, watering the plants, maintaining the stuff in the house That said, when given the opportunity to be lazy, I am lazy. The harder I work, the more I get done in all arenas of life, to a point. I really think that the American ideals of efficiency and productivity have been driven to an extreme and that we will continue to discover the extents of the negative effects for years. If I could eliminate one thing that I feel would benefit me I think it would be this ingrained cultural ideal of success. Note that many of those in the most "successful" positions in Western society are also some of the least satisfied.
Ah to have a housekeeper, a cook and a driver. I could get so much more done with a driver. That is one thing that if I had the means I would probably do is hire a driver. It would be a buddy that was down on his luck and needed a steady income. But driving is time wasted for me. I'm not particularly fond of it and it takes a good amount of time. Right now I drive about 5 hours a week. That is a TON of potentially productive time.Note that many of those in the most "successful" positions in Western society are also some of the least satisfied.
Lots of subjective words in that sentence. Not saying I don't think it's likely...
As much as I loved third-world living, it has its drawbacks. First-world living does too. If only labor could be both affordable and pay fair, livable wages in the first-world. Or conversely: if only the third-world had some of the things I love about the first-world. It's like waking up from a good dream and going back to sleep in the hopes that it'll still play the way it felt it was going to . . .
I could definitely eliminate TV in my life too. We don't have cable, but that doesn't mean we don't watch television. It just means we use netlix and the like. I still probably watch about an hour a day. That is 7 hours a week. That's too much imo.
I'm not sure how much it affect my life, but my horrible sleep schedule makes me feel like I don't get much done in the day. Even though I stay up late doing things and don't get as much sleep as I should, there's something about waking up late in the day that makes it feel wasted.
I rarely go to sleep before 2am and I get up every day at 8am. It's a bit rough, but am pretty productive. Normally it's the beer, not the lack of sleep that does the damage. Maybe I need some homemade tea instead :)
