As a Canadian I wonder at the last election and just learning about this issue makes me angry. Politicians write their own districts, that is at the crux of the issue. People need to stand up for an overhaul of election laws. One, electoral districts must be drawn by non-partisan riding association. State Legislatures should only recommend how many seat their should be not decide what each district looks like. This alone would break the partisan grid lock in Washington, and in State Houses around the United States. Second, their needs to be a non-partisan elections Commission. This commission similar to "Elections Canada" organizes each election and plays as a referee for cheating. Both sides complain about cheating why not put in a ref? Third, registration and reduce the waiting times to take no more than 15 minutes. Fourth, increase the two years of elected officials to four. Well this gives a politician four years of cover. More importantly he/she does not have to raise as much money. Fifth, reduce the window primary and general election. In Canada when our elections are called it takes no more than two months. If you can reduce the time frame the election bills are cheaper. The non-partisan election commission could mandate strict dates. Sixth, have a top two primary system such as in California. Attach this with more involvement making independents already registered. Top two system can give Republicans a moderate base without being feared of being primaries. Also, Conservative Democrats can get elected when playing against another Democrats because they will get more Republican votes. Any other ideas would be great discussion feel free too add or extrapolate some of my thoughts.
