This is pretty in line with what I feel about Facebook. Thoughts?
I don't go to Facebook to find interesting ideas, for the same reason I would never go to a buffet expecting good food.We need to go back to smaller communities. Where people aren’t lost in the mediocre averages of large networks. That’s where ideas flourish
Facebook still has one amazing feature. Party invites. I can see everyone who was invited and easily find the address.
Great point! It's second to none on party invites. Probably because it acts like a directory in that case and advertisers can't pay to have Coke at your party (or maybe they should).
Facebook sucks because everyones' mom and dad is on it
Yep. Another reason why instagram and twitter are better.
Unless I just can't find it. I can't seem to remove certain people from my feed anymore without unfriending them. That has made Facebook pretty awful for me. Facebook serves two purposes for me: to share photos of my daughter with my aunts, and to rarely contact someone who I don't see often. I thought that Google+'s circles might work better, but now I think the ideal 'real name' social app would basically be an address book in terms of connecting to people, but my feed would be disconnected from that. In fact, a feed would just be threaded conversations that someone intentionally started, and you could participate if you were invited into it. Only people in these conversations could see them. The last part would be that every account could have a mini-blog/photostream, and the owner would decide who could see it on an individual person basis. No default visibility at all. You can partially acheive this with FB and G+, but here, I think what you can't do is perhaps more important than what you can.
This is what I do. I have lots of Facebook friends, but a lot of them are either people I don't really know or people who just post too much, and I just remove them from my Facebook feed. This way I get to keep the Facebook connection with people, and not have a feed taken up with crap.Unless I just can't find it. I can't seem to remove certain people from my feed anymore without unfriending them. That has made Facebook pretty awful for me.
If you go onto their profile page and click the "Friends" button on their cover image, a scroll list will appear - just uncheck "Show in News Feed".
Lol. Well thanks for reading my post even though I wrote the title like a 4 year old. I changed it for you. I read it this morning and wanted to share it before I went to work so admittedly I was a little rushed. (@thenewgreen) tagging so I don't have to write two posts and can still get his attention. Facebook really does suck now. The Author makes the point at the end. To this point, Instagram is much more enjoyable to use now. Its smaller and its filled with less content from parties you do not care about whether they be friends of friends, advertisers, or groups. Its ultimately doomed to end up like their owners in the long run. It'll be necessary to put in paid content to monetize the usership. I've raised this point before but I don't understand why a paid social network doesn't emerge as a viable option in this market space. An ideal Facebook would have been a directory of people and their connections. People can message each other, post text updates and pictures.
Actually, Instagram satisfies almost all of what I use Facebook for. I post images of my wife/daughter for relatives/friends that don't live near to see. I don't really care what someones clever status update is, but I do like seeing pictures of their life and how they are doing. For more than that, I'd just call them or email. Other than that, I use Hubski.
#OutOfNetworkFollow What do you think about #twitter? I find that it has some of the same qualities as #Instagram. You are in control of your own feed. You can turn off what friends of friends say (retweets). Paid content is mildly relevant, interesting and not spam.
The vast majority of what I see on twitter is trite as a result of its obvious limitations. This is great for people with nothing much to say but it doesn't do much for those that do or those that are looking for people that do. If I want trite, I'll take it via images and therefore instagram is fine by me. Truth told, I have a number of twitter accounts, probably 4 or 5 and I almost never visit them. Are you a fan?
Yeah. Its all about being able to control the content in your feed. Also, I have a more intimate following on twitter than the hundreds of people who would see my content on facebook. So there's less overhead. Everyone on twitter had to make an effort to find me and had to care to see what I post. Facebook isn't like that anymore. ^ Similar reasons why I like to share on hubski. Very intimate following, able to control the content. Great ways to view the content and interact.
Yeah, someone today asked me "what makes hubski different" and I essentially said that on Hubski, you exchange ideas often enough with the same people that you end up developing a relationship of sorts and in some instances, even a friendship. -That's pretty cool imo.
