Here is last weeks thread, which was great as usual. flagamuffin is very busy this week and said if somebody else wanted to do this thread, they could. So thanks to him for that, here is his latest post.
This past week I've been listening to a lot of Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti, mainly his albums Before Today, and Mature Themes. If you're looking for some great washed-out Indie Rock, with some experimental influence then check out these albums.
I would also like the make a quick plug for Hubski's Last.fm group, if you have an account feel free to join!
My friend convinced me to start listening to Animal Collective. So far my favorite album is Sung Tongs, and my favorite song is Sweet Road. Sweet and short.
Animal Collective is great stuff, and actually has helped to put out Ariel Pink's material. They're pretty hard to get into, what ended up convincing you to try them?
My roommate listens to them every single day, and since we live together there's no way to avoid hearing it. At first I didn't particularly like it, but I didn't mind it at all; some of the songs even began to grow on me after listening to them so often. So basically I was forced into liking some of my new favorite music!
I have always wanted to participate in these but I am always at work so I can never link to the songs I want to (YouTube blocked). I hope no one minds if I post the band and song name, and hopefully you can look them up on your own! Ever since I went to that Cloud Cult concert with my brother, I have been in love with them! One of their top tracks for me is Good Friend (Found a blog that links to the MP3! Yay!) Also, I'm going to go see a concert in my home state next week. The band I'm going to see is called David Wax Museum, but I'm actually equally psyched for the opening act, Kingsley Flood Right now, I can't listen to Habit enough. If you like country-rock sort of stuff, you will really enjoy these guys! If you want to check out David Wax Museum as well, I would recommend Harder Before It Gets Easier but "Yes Maria Yes" is another one of their top tracks. They call themselves "Texo-Americana." "Folk" is another good description. Hope the links worked, I did a good ol' Google search and copy/pasted shortcuts.
Cloud Cult is a good band! Never listened to David Wax Museum before, but this is some pretty cool stuff.
I've been listening to far too much No Age this week.
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti! I love that band. Before Today is one of my favourite albums, it's just so ridiculously catchy. Beverly Kills makes me want to learn bass guitar. I found Youth Lagoon on /r/futurepopmusic. Fantastic dreamy psychedelic pop music. A good one to zone out to. As a little PSA, /r/futurebeats is a great subreddit for finding new music. I've been getting more into that scene over the past few months, we're talking any vaguely far-out electronic dance music with a definite bias towards Boards of Canada and Flying Lotus.
I'm scared to check out the rest of his catalog, but those two albums are great. They're perfectly funky and catchy. Round and Round also has some Top Gun references thrown in, if you've seen that movie. Youth Lagoon is a great band, with two really, really good albums. Not sure which one I prefer. NEW BOARDS OF CANADA MAYBE SOMETIME SOON EXCITED AH! Flying Lotus is good too.
Yeah, AFAIK pre Haunted Graffiti Ariel Pink was just some weirdo recording shit in his bedroom (which apparently lent the music much of its appeal). Creepily similar tastes. I've listened to Music Has A Right To Children and the Campfire Headphase and not much else from BoC. I feel that now is about the right time to check the rest of their catalogue out. Thundercat (prod by FlyLo) is releasing his next album so that should be good (bass guitar-heavy jazz fusion). I'm gonna listen to the other Youth Lagoon album now. So much music, so little time...
Got a musical second finally, enjoying the new She & Him more than I've enjoyed any of the previous albums. It's just very sweet. More "she" than "him" in this one however.
Thanks for the link. I have a pretty healthy Zooey D crush and M. Ward, well he's pretty damn awesome too.
The AMG review I read (which convinced me to check it out -- other than being a huge fan of Merge Records, I didn't have any reason to really, because their first two volumes weren't too interesting) noted that ZD has almost completely taken over vocals from M. Ward. This is a shame, but it's also kind of impressive.
Also, I can't find the amg review. Was wondering if my pal Jamie wrote it. He wrote the review for their Christmas Album
I have no idea, I've never listened to it. I just noticed it there when I went hunting for the AMG review of V3. I abide by a similar "no christmas albums" rule.
From what I remember M. Ward didn't do too much singing on the last albums either. I liked the last two though, so we differ in that. I'm a big M. Ward fan, he's fantastic but I think Zooey is too, her voice is sublime imo and the more of it, the better.
I liked them fine, just they didn't interest me enough to deliberately seek out V3, but it came out on NPR First Listen so it was too convenient to ignore, etc. I love his voice, so making me not miss it on V3 is quite an achievement for Zooey. I seem to remember more of it in the first two but I'm probably wrong.
Its exam week, so Van Morrison and anything else that can make me chipper
This was a really great music week. Snog - Babes in Consumerland got released. I posted the video for the single in a previous weekly music thread, and on its own, but here it is again. Partly Faithful - Lazarus Under Glass. New Chris and Cosey single! Wolf Eyes -- No Answer - Lower Floors Trepaneringsritualen - Judas Goat The Nikki Grace Experience - Hearse: The Black and White Opinion
Really digging the Wolf Eyes that you posted!
Lot's of doomtree right now. Bangarang has been my hype up before work song so it's a little burnt out for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vtsar_VBCmk Coup for the kings is nice too: http://doomtree.bandcamp.com/track/coup-for-the-kings
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vhf5cuXiLTA Great funny silly Macklemore song. Just randomly popped up on my Spotify radio. There's a knock on the door, it's the neighbors
Quit cock blocking
We're having a ho-down, you hoe's down?
Don't let me pull my hose out
'Cause it's big, long, pink, strong
Unpopular opinion: That is my absolute least favorite Macklemore song.
It's not a great song but it is funny and ridiculous and great when you're in the mood for that. :P
Tom Harrell - Harvest Song I can't remember if I've posted this on the music thread before, but here it is. Sit back with some nice speakers, and enjoy. This is one of the most beautiful tunes to have ever been written. Enjoy.
Hawaiian folk slack key guitarist Leonard Kwan. Really beautiful and calming instrumentals: Opihi Bounce. Opihi Momona Nui. Both of these are from the 'Slack Key' Album, which is good all around. If you have Spotify load this guy up.
