That is the statement I was looking for. As flagamuffin said, this is a step into a new era, and they need to be careful about how they crowdsource the data - making sure to let people know that they themselves are not directly involved in the investigation.The data used in the investigation will be crowdsourced. The investigation will not be. A crowdsourced investigation runs a high risk of becoming a witchhunt, as we saw in the Newton shooting spree.

Really feels like a step into a new era, to me. Next time we get footage of cops trying to destroy smart phones that have been used to record them legally, I hope someone remembers that those same phones were being used in the hunt for justice in the marathon aftermath.
