Ouch, I might give you the Smiths, but Joy Division?! o_O

Just give it a listen. :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PldpBJEn4vQ

No one was doing this. No one.

I have a dislike of post-punk in general. I'm looking it up on Wikipedia now and, apart from Devo, which I'm a huge fan, I don't like anything on the list. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-punk

I'm not a fun of gloomy stuff in general. That song in particular reminded me of Lost In The Supermarket (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVcM79U46z8&feature=fvwre...), by The Clash, which is from the same year as Unknown Pleasures. So no one? Maybe, but I think this requires further research.

Lost in the Supermarket is one of my favorite songs. I agree with you in that I'm not a big "post punk" fan. But of that list, Joy Division has to be one of the greats.

"I wasn't born so much as I fell out" -What a great lyric. The Clash and Joe Strummer in particular are amazing.

They're great, aren't they? I like long distance callers make long distance calls.

On the topic of great Clash music, "Career Opportunities" (I believe form the same album as "Lost in the Supermarket") is my favorite song of theirs. Can you imaging any modern American artist proudly shouting a lyric like "I hate the army, and I hate the RAF."? The Brits aren't as military loving as us, but still, what balls.

Career Oportunities it's actually from their debut The Clash. LitS is from London Calling. But, yes, great song, although I like ska-Clash better than punk-Clash.

Spanish Bombs is one of my favorites.

Thanks. Couldn't remember off the top of my head. I'm more on the side of punk Clash. Having said that, have you ever heard Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash's cover of Redemption Song? Obviously not a Ska song, but it is Bob Marley, and thus shares some roots in that world. Its beyond good.

That one appears to be the same guitar track and Strummer voice track, but lacks Cash. This one below is what I was thinking of...

caio and b_b check out this live version of Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros playing their song "Bindi Bhagee". It's a favorite of mine. Joe kept making music right up till the end. What cool fucking guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZiPCJrd0_4

Really, aside from the riding on the high hat, I just don't hear it. I hear ska, not gloomy rock. But, is it fair to judge them on taste? If I was to go there, I'd say the Beatles, but people will shoot you for saying stuff like that. :)

I can understand not digging gloomy stuff.

Consider yourself shot!

And I'll stomp your hand after, just to make sure you're not playing possum! Go move to the town in footloose where dancing isn't allowed!

HA!
caio  ·  4773 days ago  ·  link  ·
If not taste, then what's our criteria? Originality, perhaps?
mk  ·  4773 days ago  ·  link  ·
I've been thinking talent and originality.

Kate Bush is probably underrated in my book too. I might say James too. That guy has some talent.

If you're not a fan of Joy Division, give She Wants Revenge a listen. Any appreciation at all for that band is misplaced, IMO. :)

Oh, Oh, Belle and Sebastian! Totally overrated!

This is fun.

caio  ·  4773 days ago  ·  link  ·
Just listened and they sound like Joy Division, but with hip hop lyrics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixw_bLVUL34
mk  ·  4773 days ago  ·  link  ·
Yep, that's pretty much what they have to offer.

Challenge: Alright mk, listen to this song (lyrics and all) and tell me you don't like it.

Scored a 7 on my Ok-O-Meter. :/ To me, it sounds like a overly-conscious guy making his voice sound overly-gentle while singing some poems he wrote. I just never got this stuff. Too much affectation, IMO.

I know people love them, but I just don't feel it.

I liked it, but, you know, if you wanna go "melancholy with a little smile", you should go all out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr_MJAOyOeU

Good one. Sigur Rós is perfect for me, because I don't pay too much attention to lyrics, so I can just hear it and enjoy the sound.

Belle and Sebastian??? Consider yourself cyber punched!

Overrated: New Order

-ouch.

mk  ·  4773 days ago  ·  link  ·
Ha! Impossible.

Substance is about 25% of modern club music.

Gerry and the Holograms or not.

caio  ·  4773 days ago  ·  link  ·
So there's nothing to it beyond Bizarre Love Triangle and Blue Monday?
thenewgreen  ·  4773 days ago  ·  link  ·
I was just kidding with mk, I like New Order. The New Green used to cover this song... it was a blast! Great song:

Meh. I like electronic New Order, not post-punk New Order.
thenewgreen  ·  4773 days ago  ·  link  ·
I don't know that we have a criteria but I was using taste, impact, artistry. It's a pretty personal thing, there's no right/wrong answer. Such is art.
