For those who notice the article is written in '06 and wonder if this is still a problem, here's a quote from Wiki for comparision. In '06 the NYT estimated there were about 1mln hikikomori in Japan. From Wiki: "The Ministry of Health estimates that about 3,600,000 hikikomori live in Japan,[4] about one third of whom are aged 30 and older."

Three-fold increase. Wow.

It begs the question, what can be done to combat depression? Its obvious we aren't doing enough, and the problem compounds itself.
