I also read several of these books as a teenager (1980 or so). They did affect me, very deeply. One image or idea that I still often think of from these books, is the concept of my death as a companion on my left, giving me strength, whom someday I will turn and face. I wish it were otherwise, but I consider them clearly to be works of fiction.

I'm with you, I wish it were otherwise as well. I feel like it's a good book for people to read around the age of 18, when you're forming new ideas and thoughts. Even if only fiction, it's a very enjoyable read and Don Juan is quite the character.
