I haven't yet read Chagnon's work, but he's certainly hated within anthropology. Recently, Marshall Sahlins (another famous anthropologist) resigned from the National Academy of Sciences after Chagnon was elected as a member: http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2013/02/25/prominent-anth...

I can't make a judgment on this because I've not read his books, but his titles of his books are certainly incendiary.

I thought it was wonderful and hilarious. Couldn't agree more with his point that anthropologists have gone political (and also that, even if at times it's appropriate for them to do so, under no circumstances should they attack those of their science that attempt to remain objective).
