I've wondered about this quite a bit. I work in accounting systems and quite a few of the projects I've worked on have displaced accountants to new positions, careers, or even unemployment. I also suspect that the reason that we have such high unemployment is that there were quite a few companies that didn't want to be the bad guy and lay people off as technology progress occurred. Now that the great recession hit, companies are forced to cut deeply, but realized that they don't need the additional workers. That means that we're undergoing serious structural changes due to technology in the labor economy right now while all of the issues are being blamed on CDOs and so forth.
It's important that we figure out what the right response from a societal perspective is on programs like job retraining, education, and so forth.
