This is similar to a discussion I have with friends about video editing software. there are simple editors like iMovie and others that have a given set of things you can do with the footage and sound. They are easy to learn, and produce great results.
But if you want to play with the big boys, it often involves much more open ended tools. There isn't really a right tool or a wrong tool overall, there are tools, and times to use them. The author puts it well: "We need both. But we also need to understand when."
