I remember being in 7th grade and reading about the Greek gods and thinking, how could people really think there was a god named Poseidon that carried a trident and rode a dolphin/horse like creature? Also, I couldn't believe that the greeks thought that the gods would be so intimately intertwined with their lives. They seemed petty, fickle gods. Then I read the bible and it amazed me the amount of superstition and fickleness that existed in the old testament. Then I went to church and couldn't believe the silly customs; kneel, sit, genuflect, outstretched hands for the body of god in the form of a wafer, the drinking of wine (blood). Some weird stuff. Just my take, to each their own. If you don't push something on me, I don't care. But to your question, I'm not sure where the doctrine of forced celibacy stems from but it seems in line with a religion of strange superstitions and customs.
