I think they ran it because it's exactly the type of story that will glue eyeballs to the tube. AC is an affable, not terribly bright teleprompter reader. He's not the sort that is really going to investigate what the site is about before running a piece like this. You've got media figures like Colbert embracing the site, but AC is not someone who would take an objective look at the big picture with low hanging ratings fruit dangling right in front of his face.
It's either illegal or it's not. It it's not, the entire piece is essentially titled "Portion of website's viewers engage in very bad taste."

"AC is an affable, not terribly bright teleprompter reader". -I actually think you're giving him too much credit. Though amongst his peers, he's s genius. Have you ever seen the Wolf Blitzer Jeopardy episode? If not, here is a condensed version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVC28oemocA&sns=em
I watched it with my dad when it first aired and remember laughing my ass off. We both thought it was so pitiful of a performance that it could have ended his career. Years later and he's still there, moderating presidential debates. Wtf?
