I don't like this article. It sets itself up to be something grander than it is by naming some very common statistics, and then it ends with a question. It is devoid of any actual content. I know that there are much more comprehensive articles about this topic out there (because I've read them), but I don't have the links or else I would post them.

True enough. I didn't walk away with much more than I came with, except for the $200B per year figure.

To be honest, I think it's going to take more than prison reform. Every major US city that I can think of has a large crime-ridden area, -places that look post apocalyptic with high rates of youth violence and underfunded schools. I think the way that our cities are supported lends to this. You have no tax base, and your schools fail. Job opportunities are slim. You have poor education and then you get the wrong people elected. The wrong people get elected, and corruption sets in.
