"The Pines of Rome," sometimes regarded as one of Ottorino Respighi's finest works, is a symphonic poem on scenes in and around the city of Rome. In "Pines," Respighi brings the listener first from children playing around the Villa Borghese to deep inside the Roman catacombs where monks chant medieval Christian hymns. He then leads the listener out from the earth and into the night on the Janiculum where a solitary nightingale sings toward the end of the movement. And finally, through the mist on the Via Appia marches a legion returning from victory in one of the most thrilling finales ever written.
Enjoy!
