I just saw the nofap subreddit today. I knew it was around, but I thought it was kinda a joke or just about a test of willpower kinda thing. But wow, there's a lot more to it; there are a lot of people in there that believe in some really crazy metaphysical life-force bullshit. It kinda blew my mind that such an innocuous community was loaded with so much new-age nonsense. So as a result, I came at this article pretty heavily skeptical. It seems like there may be some rational reasons to suspect endemic porn side effects, but it's hard to separate those who rationally think so from those who want to believe. The credibility of TEDx talks are definitely suspect and need vetting, so I'll have to see what that talk is like once I'm in an environment where I'd want to watch a talk about that, ha.
Definitely agree, a good portion of those guys are insane. It's a mix of new found confidence for doing something that's pretty difficult and new age bullshit like suddenly believing that you get new found superpowers or attractiveness because of slightly higher testosterone levels. I mean really, it's not watching porn that is the problem, it's when you're masturbating to it 8 times a day or something ridiculous like that.
Largely off topic, but you reminded me of this bit from a comedy DVD I recently watched.there are a lot of people in there that believe in some really crazy metaphysical life-force bullshit
