Chances are that he'll die of something else. I've heard estimates that 1/3 of men die with prostate cancer, whether or not they are aware of it. The fact that he hasn't had surgery indicates that it is probably quite benign.

The cutoff year varies depending on who you talk to, but the medical establishment generally agrees that it's better not to treat prostate cancer in advanced age because it's usually more benign than the treatment itself.

The part where he talks about it being carefully examined/monitored for changes is also a sign that it probably won't be too much of an issue.

Technically, if I remember my definitions correctly, its not cancer unless the tumor is malignant.
