Just received a job offer! Pays nowhere near enough, but a job is a job and I'll work it for a bit. They said I'd be eligible for a raise at 6 months so that'll be very helpful.
It's an emergency preparedness position with local government. It's primarily working with nursing homes and stockpile management/logistics in case of emergency. I think it'll be really fun and a good way to grow after my COVID experience.
First week at my new government job! Genuinely feel like I made the right decision, at least based on first impressions. The biggest downside is that the standard deviation on my 90 minute commute is, like, 45 minutes. But the people are nice and I have some interesting things to work on, much more in the realm of bicycle infrastructure and traffic safety than before. The biggest thing I need to get used to is probably the pace of things. I'm used to hit the ground running and a pretty fast pace. But discussing my work today I went "so you have just one urgent thing for me? how urgent is urgent?" and the answer was "well we need something by the end of January, how about we decide on the roadmap in two weeks". (Not that I'm complaining! This is what I wanted.)
It's now Sunday. In two hours I am going to a Palestinean-Somali wedding reception. Should be ok. What to wear, what to wear? I've been asked to drive a couple and their baby. They don't speak English, but we can smile and nod. It's about a 35-. As for work (I'm retired!), but I have some talks and workshops to prepare for the fall. The topic is writing family stories. Maybe I'll post my talk outline, when I finally write it.
Three weeks into my role in IT, having finally left office management. It's amazing. The people are friendly, the work is interesting, and I'm so used to a stupidly hectic workload that what they're asking of me is quite doable, even as I'm learning the ropes. Plus there's actual clarity around the role. I have a portfolio of things to take care of, tickets come in when the helpdesk can't solve it, and away I go. I'm even working from home today, which wasn't ever really an option before. Is.. Is this, room to breathe? What a concept.
Today was my first day of my new corporate job. There were no fires to put out, no sudden changes without clear recourse, and all in all, everything unfolded according to plan, which I am not used to. I think I'm going to like it here and it feels like a lot of hard work I've put in over the years is finally paying off. I think it will take some adjusting, but I'm really looking forward to it!
Nothing like starting the day off with some identity theft. Got some emails about my new bank account this morning. Still waking up, I'm thinking "did someone put their email in wrong?" But then I saw that they seemed to have my correct name and info, HERE WE GO. About an hour later I think I've done all the stuff I should... reported it to the bank, fraud alert, opened a FTC case etc. etc. But anyways I don't recall if I mentioned it here before, but one of the additional hobbies I've picked up this year is film photography. Here's one from the latest roll that's kinda cool, near Palmdale.
Did my fourth 70.3 distance triathlon today. Amazing weather lead to a small overall PR and a big run PR. I really tried to keep the run pace slow to not blow up and end up run/walking most of the course.
