LOL Ian Urbina wrote a whole fucking book about this. TL;DR - The Jones Act is the only reason there is any "law of the high seas" AT ALL and the general decline of maritime shipping by American-flagged companies is due to the fact that no other country requires any adherence to safety standards, environmental regulations, workplace protections or any of the bleeding-heart liberal labor protections enacted since the Pinkerton riots. If you want actual, literal slavery on the Mississippi river again, repeal the Jones Act. It's all it'll take.
