From what I digest of the orbital mechanics of this mission, They need Mars to adjust the angle of the orbit to meet up with Psyche, which orbits the sun at an angle of 3° which may not seem like a lot, but it involves a significant expense of energy. Considering the launch windows to Mars and the orbit of this asteroid, it will probably be 52 months before they get a window again to try.
As unfortunate as this is, there's always a fine line between "shit we're late, better ship the flight software as it is even though we haven't tested it all...oh sweet, it works!" and "...ah fuck, we're fucked!" 52 months with more software testing might be more preferable than launching now and failing the mission. It's a mission manager's biggest dilemma.
