Hello fellow Hubskinites!
Wanted to plop on here to share my two most recent oil paintings:
1)
"Of Elsewhere"
oil on canvas
27x64” (69x163cm)
This painting was a complete improvisation. I went into it wanting to let my intuition guide the way and am very happy with the results.
I have archival prints of "Of Elsewhere" available, they're ~20x43" (51x109cm), lemme know if you want one!
2)
"On Yellow"
oil on canvas
20x20” (51x51cm)
This painting was a really fun process. I had been studying the work of my all time favorite artist, Kandinsky, and learned that even for his most obscure abstract pieces he'd create studies to map out shapes and colors. I decided to follow suit.
Here's the original sketch, about 4x4" (10x10cm). You can see that the main idea here is to block out the largest forms, indicating the overall flow of the shapes.
After this, I moved to a 12x12" (30x30cm) gouache study where I elaborated on the design and made my general color decisions. This study is the first time I used a ruling pen. These are tools that were popular for creating drafts and allow incredibly sharp and straight lines. I tried super hard to get it to work with oil on the final piece, but I couldn't get the viscosity right. Eventually with the final version I simply used a flat brush and t ruler to get the lines as they needed to be.
Thanks for taking the time to check these out, I'd love to hear response/feedback of any sort.
Also lemme know if you want a print of "Of Elsewhere," there are only ten total available :)
Ok, I've heard people say they were inspired by Kandinsky before... but THIS IS AWESOME. You really do FEEL the Kandinsky in there... but it isn't just a copy of an extant Kandinsky. It really is something new! I also like "Of Elsewhere", too. Has a much more Dr Seuss vibe to it. I expect Sneeches. :-)
Thank you for these very kind words. I’m glad you pointed out that it’s not an exact replica but still maintains the vibe. I’ve seen a lot of art on Instagram with the hashtag #kandinsky that look like exact replicas. While that’s chill, it’s also much more chill to fuse one’s personal flair with the giants whose shoulders we stand in.
