The names I recognize are Courtney Dauwalter, Mike Wardian, and Maggie Guterl.
4.16667 miles every hour until the last standing.
one more trail loop after this and they return to the road. the runners seem to have adapted to life as a perpetual running machines. no one seems to be having the least difficulty as hour follows hour and they make their endless circles. if anything, their expressions are those of serenity. they seem to have transcended the boundaries of fatigue and pain and the miles flow beneath their feet as effortlessly as the passage of time. the 5 are in a different dimension.hour 58 is in progress.
Laz is blogging the hours the 31st hour was like gettysburg. we lost 4. matthew shepard, who had been strong as a bull fell and damaged his hip. limping badly, he barely made it in to finish 31. shawn webber made it in, but he was ready to pull the plug. ron wireman and jennifer russo did not finish within the hour. just like that we are down to 23. of course a lot of runners have fallen well short of the marks they had recorded in qualifying. but the difficulty of big’s is easily overlooked due to the quality of fields that have run here…. which is only fitting for a race to be considered a world championships…. here are some statistics: most 30 yard performances in a single race: 27-big dog’s backyard ultra 2021 21-big dog’s backyard ultra 2019 16-big dog’s backyard ultra 2018 15-ohio’s backyard ultra 2021 12-suffolk backyard ultra 2021 11-capitalbackyard ultra 2021 10-last one standing florida manor 2021 it only follows that this year’s field, despite the issues caused by covid restrictions was indeed the best ever assembled. the number of runners over 30 yards would support that, there have been some casualties this last few hours but there are still 23 athletes out on yard 32 the fun has just begun. so i need to take a quick nap. the 10 minute sleep i got overnight is about to wear off!
Yukinori Yoshida is still in it after 100 miles. He won the 2020 Last Samurai Standing event with 225 miles.
And it’s done...kind of. Harvey Lewis is the winner!
Terumichi tripped, temporarily lost consciousness, and missed a cutoff. https://www.instagram.com/p/CVObxm-rXQ_/ The last two are out on lap 83.
That is an awful way to end, I was wondering what happened to Terumichi.
Out of 35 starters, five completed 60 loops, 250 miles, and all five went out for another loop. All five are looking strong in the cool evening under the full moon. Terumichi Morishita M 41 Toyota City JPN Chris Roberts M 35 Kirkwood MO Piotr Chadovich M 43 Woodinville WA Harvey Lewis M 45 Cincinnati OH Jon Noll M 36 Verona WI
I was fully expecting to wake up this morning and see the race had concluded with a winner. Very exciting to see that is not the case, amazing that there's THREE people still in it!
Piotr dropped right after my comment, and Jon went on for 62 laps before stopping. The last three seem unstoppable. Chris was struggling through the night on the road course, but seems to have made a recovery on the daytime trail route. Harvey has looked strong from the start, and Morishita is keeping up. This is what they look like after 300 miles over three days and three nights.
Not sure who Piotr is but he’s also nearby to where I live. If y’all don’t know Harvey Lewis, good time to learn. He’s a US 24-hr team guy. Interested in how far he goes.
Really cool and surprising to see Gavin Woody still in it. He’s a local guy who has had some big days but generally hasn’t been focused on training for endurance running this year, from what I’ve seen.
I'll have to figure out who Jon Noll is, because he's local from here and still in.
Looks like he bailed after 150 miles (36 loops) with local guy Mike Wardian. so, we got the survivors off on yard 36. everyone looks really happy. they finished off the final trail loop with dispatch and i cannot imagine any of the 19 to fail to finish 36.Hour 35
Here’s a gallery of the entrants, including those who were unable to attend due to being European:
