In every stone

There's a river that's longing for the sea

A million years or more of running wears it down,

Til you can't tell just what they used to be

Maybe they were rough

With jagged edges that'd cut your careless feet to bits

Or flowing curves like little Rocky Mountain ranges

That some gift shop sold as counterfeits

But now they're all the same

And it's easier to walk the banks with how smooth they all became

But I wish I could've seen when they were mountains

Cause all that I see now is just that river that was longing for the sea

When I was young

Everyone asked me what it was that I'd grow up to be

An engineer, or some sort of artist trying to make a life from melodies

I couldn't choose

And I just let that mighty river take me from the shore

Now I can't recall the pretty edges or the rough parts of me anymore

Ain't that a crying shame

But it's easier to fit in

When all the shape are just the same

But I wish that we could live like we were mountains

And step right out of that river that keeps pulling everybody to the sea

As time goes on

Instead of smoothing, we get wrinkles where the body folds

And we turn into living road maps of all the signs of love and life and grief we've ever known

And the stories all end the same

No matter where you been, you'll go right back from where you came

But I hope that when I die, I die a mountain

Just standing rough and lonesome,

By that river that keeps longing for the sea.
