The next object which struck my attention in my walk was the deer with which the wood abounded. They were of the kind called "Cerfs," and not exactly of the same species with ours. They are blackish indeed under the belly, and not white as ours, and they are more of the chestnut red; but these are such small differences as would be sure to happen in two races from the same stock breeding separately a number of ages.

TREMENDOUSLY fucked up that this idea is under attack from the right in our country, almost two hundred and thirty years later.

Exactly! The GOP's war on the family Cervidae must cease! I kid. But yeah, Jefferson understood that the same species breeding under different environmental pressures would result in "changes" why can't many of our current leaders? But then, the guy was brilliant and our current politicians are, well this. -puked in my mouth a little bit after seeing that smile.

[edit] by the way, great observation from the letter. I didn't pick that up in the same way.
