Did I spell catalytic right?
"The spot where Mr. Kevane’s converter was cut out from under his car.Credit...James Tensuan for The New York Times" "Context, Jimmy - a story needs context! If it bleeds it leads! Put a human face on this... exhaust pipe parts theft! Bring them... the pathos" If the New York Times were a journalistic organization worth the paper it's printed on, they'd talk about how the reason prices are so dumbly high is market manipulation, as is always the case. But it's not, so they won't, so James gets to get proctological on a Prius.
dang.... I bet there is some kind of proportional relationship between economic hardship and this. A cordless reciprocating saw can be had for so cheap - one catalytic converter could possible buy several. I know in Denver several years ago, all of the scrap yards and recycling places stopped taking them from anyone but pre-authorized recyclers. And you have to cough up an ID if you want to recycle any metals here now - theoretically to clamp down on some of this nonsense. But criminals gonna crime...
Friend has her RV parked in a lot with a bunch of other RVs. Thieves have been through three times in the last month, removing catalytic converters. It's like they know the date everyone gets their replaced, and they just show up two days later and chop em out again. If parking anywhere else in Seattle was an option, she'd take it.
