If you ever have time to kill read up on Ne Win the former dictator of Burma who bathed in dolphin blood, established a base 9 currency and shot reflection of himself in mirrors to prevent assassination's. That and so much more. I've put in about three hours of Myanmar reading and have a shit ton of tabs open in other interesting diversions about the country and it's people. It's a fucking whackadoodle country.
You weren’t kidding. https://www.historyanswers.co.uk/people-politics/ne-win-the-burmese-dictator-who-bathed-in-blood/ Pretty crazy stuff. Don’t elect anyone that uses a soothsayer.
One of my favorite Quebecois graphic novelist wrote a book about his time in Myanmar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burma_Chronicles Excerpt: https://drawnandquarterly.com/sites/default/files/docs/samples/BURMA.interior-p17-27_0.pdf Might be a good time for a re-read! Just bought his newest novel about working at a paper making factory in his youth, and while it was good he really shines in his travel memoirs. My favorite book of his is Jerusalem, a good primer for anyone unfamiliar with the Israel/Palestine conflict, but also not ready to read dry political analysis. It does a lot of pointing out everyday contradictions and quirks of living there, from a confused expat point of view. The kind of things that peak my interest while traveling, mundane things like differences of light switch design around the world.
