Firstly I will admit that I am from reddit however a i was only there for a short while
I just didn't find the place a good fit
Here seems to be much better however the only problem where can I go discuss certain topics
If anyone could give me any advice it would be greatly appreciated
There are only about 30 people on here and most of us overshare. Treating your interactions as if you're talking to someone you will never talk to again will virtually guarantee that you will end up with no one to talk to. The site mechanics are pretty inscrutible and terrible. mk keeps trying to eliminate spammers without eliminating spammers so people like you are howling into the void where no one can hear you for 12 hours. If you don't have email notifications turned on you'll never know what's happening with any of your posts. It's a good idea to pretend you're talking to a friend because this site tends to foster friendships.
No shame in being from reddit, that's how I found this place too. I think the best advice I can give you is that things move sslllloooooowwwwwwwww here compared to forums where there's a larger base of users. Most of us here seem to be absurdly busy with life outside of this place, but I still drop in maybe a couple of times each day on average, and others range from about the same to maybe a couple of times each week. That said, it's not taboo to initiate a conversation in old threads. I wish people did it more. Make a post and tag it #askhubski or #tellhubski, whichever's appropriate. A lot of people follow those tags, and not a lot of people have been using them lately, so you've got a good shot at an audience. Hubski search (the magnifying glass in the topmost right corner) works pretty well these days. There's a lot of content here accrued over the last decade. Just click around, you're not gonna break anything. Probably.
Like kleinbl00 said, there's only a handful of active people on here, and I think that's the best part. I'm new too--just joined like a week ago after lurking for a few months--but it's really cool how the discussions really do turn into discussions. It's not just anonymous shitposting, it's like "oh man, I can't wait to see what kleinbl00 and goobster said now, and I hope oftenben is doing alright, he seemed really down this morning." I checked out the number of followers on the biggest accounts, like mk and kleinbl00, and there only seem to be about 1500 named users in the whole ecosystem. The UI and the overall opaqueness of how the site works is a little off-putting at first, but once you get into a good chat with some of the folks on here, it's really awesome having a place to come talk to people. Hubski is like the anti-2020, at least that's what I see on here. You'll also quickly learn to love the tags, because people use them pretty consistently, so you can go way down the rabbit hole on something by following links down at the bottom of a post with tags on it.
Keep visiting for about a week. Read what people post. Just be a lurker for a bit. You'll get the swing of it. A lot of people here have been on the site for a very long time, and many have met in person. So there will be a lot of in-jokes and references you won't get. Don't sweat it. Just present you are going to the first Thanksgiving with your significant other, and you don't know any of their family yet. You smile, nod, ask someone (is that Aunt Gertrude?) to pass the mashed potatoes. And eventually you'll find your vibe here. Or you won't. This isn't the place for everyone, and there's no shame in that. Welcome!
We don't have subcommunities here the same way they have on Reddit. Instead, we add tags to our posts, so if you're in the mood to discuss a particular topic, you'll have to filter by that tag. So, for example, you can see all posts about music, or space, or the environment. You can search for tags using the looking glass icon on the top right.
Certain topics are grouped together by tags. You may start to see the same usernames are active in certain tags. I recommend following both usernames and tags. Your feed will start looking much different as you begin to follow tags and users. You can also click comments or posts to hop in anywhere. Every Wednesday is #pubski, where people talk about anything and everything. Usually, what’s going on in their life.
