Soooooo... yeah. As is obvious to everyone, my thinking on this topic was very narrow indeed (the typical entitled middle-aged white American male, for whom all things are designed), and didn't take into account the other use cases where deleting one's content is a clearly a Good Thing. Instead of copping out and deleting this embarrassing lapse in reason/thinking, I'm gonna be the change I want to see in the world and leave this post up. Thanks to everyone for their part in illustrating the broader picture I missed. (And apologies to mk for suggesting that you may have written such a repugnant feature.)
You know something? Being wrong is ok, and I am glad to have shared being wrong with you. Tangent: I have been taking my daughter to the skate park recently. It reminded me just how much skateboarding looks like a constant string of failure. Can you imagine a world in which the same frequency of intellectual biffs was not evidence of shortcoming, but of drive for excellence? No one looks at a borked kick-flip as anything but a necessary step to a clean one.
I got to do a day with Rune Glifberg for Converse a while back. Ran into him at a park in Long Beach later. He and his wife were teaching his son, who was probably four, how to shred. The kid kept eating shit. His mom would call out "don't cry or I'll make you put on a helmet!" Thus are Klingon warriors forged, not born.
