Like AMP and Instant Articles, it doesn't generate the same type of page views for the original article, affecting monetization and website income. Additionally, if you go to the actual website, instead of relying on these other services, you might stick around and read more after you finish the article, generating more page views and income.

I just assumed they have some sort of syndication deal with their source sites that the sources feel covers the loss in income from not getting "direct" eyeballs

Man. I don't know if they have a syndication deal or not, I genuinely hope they do, because that'd make the practice at least a little bit better for content creators.
