Here's a local story about it that was well reported. Federal Law Enforcement Use Unmarked Vehicles To Grab Protesters Off Portland Streets The first place this was reported was on Twitter. The coverage from the front lines on Twitter has been fantastic. Almost everything that happens has been live streamed on Periscope or other apps. The narrative that the authorities are spinning and the reality on the ground are often very divergent. If it weren't for Twitter journalist and people being able to film stuff on their phones this wouldn't be a story right now. I can't tell you how many times I've been watching a peaceful protest in the last month where one or two people throw a water bottle at armored and helmeted police officers, a riot is called and the protesters are gassed, shot with less lethal projectiles and beaten. The cops then pick up every rock, brick and other possible projectile in a two block radius and and said it's the things that were thrown at them. I think more tear gas has been used in downtown Portland this year than the entire United States for the past five (just a guess but holy shit there has been a lot of gas used). Here's a video of the Feds shooting a guy with a boom box in the head with a less lethal munition. Fed snatching If you want to watch an orgy of police violence and severe graffiti crime it's all right here.
Semi-reputable outlets are finally starting to pick this up, with Esquire saying "The Authoritarian Operation in Portland Is Only a Dress Rehearsal". It's WaPo's Ruth Marcus's "opinion" that this is unconstitutional. What a radical opinion! To everyone feeling remotely confident that there'll be an election, or that Trump will step down if he loses: I envy you, and if comes down to it, I hope to meet you in D.C. on January 21st.
NPR and The Guardian too. There'll be an election though.
We'll see. covid might become a Trump-recognized MAJOR emergency on Halloween. "No voting, folks, for your own safety". And I know states control and administer elections, but we'll see.
Sadly, I first saw it at least two days ago on reddit linking to the tweeterverse
Oh shit! If you post a link to someones Twitter on Hubski the link disappears! MK DOESN'T WANT YOU TO KNOW THE TRUTH!!!! SEE THIS LINK RIGHT HERE --->> THAT'S RIGHT YOU DON'T!!! It's also fucks up the post when you try and edit it. Everything gets put upside down, and makes editing impossible. I think this shows Hubskis anti twitter bias which it's always worn on it's sleeve.
Yup, never attempt editing a post with embedded tweets. It'll invert the order of the paragraphs, and I think there were other issues, but right now, mk is working on how to embed your coffee on here; much more important.
I don't think the election will be canceled for two reasons, or maybe two and a half. First, I don't think Trump's ego will allow for him to plan for something like this. He is literally incapable of imagining a scenario in which he's not beloved by everyone, so the idea that he could actually be voted out is just not something he can comprehend very well. This makes planning for such an event difficult. Second, assuming I'm wrong about this (or that Trump is manipulated into affecting the election), it's too overt. It would cause significant unrest, even more than we've already seen. Even if Trump's supporters among the powerful don't actually care, it's still messy and would hurt their bottom lines. Especially when there's an alternative: create just enough in terms of impediments to voting and the like that the election still happens, Trump wins, but there's nothing overtly illegitimate about the process. If it takes more than a single sentence to explain why the election is illegitimate, you've lost the argument. Meanwhile, Biden will concede "for the good of the country," and there we go. It's rocky, but Trump gets what he wants, and without even more civil unrest (read: economic harm). The third / second-and-a-half thing is that, like uhsguy says, there's not the support among people who could actually pull this kind of thing off subtlety. Trump has his acting DHS secretary, but I question whether enough people within the DHS and other three-letter agencies would actually be willing to go along with this for it to work. At that point he'd have to do something incredibly overt, which brings us back to my first two objections, only worse, because he'd have significant parts of the defense/intelligence establishment openly opposing him.
I really don’t understand the election being canceled batshittery. Nothing is going to fundamentally change Biden is the establishment candidate. He’s supported by every 3 letter agency and mega corporation and he’s up double digits in the polls. Nobody is canceling anything. The real election was the primary and yes I suppose that got canceled but nobody cares.
Mother would certainly be pleased to be First Lady for any period of time. After some reflection, Pence definitely has a stack of stuff in the 'Things I would do if I was President' list that are in pursuit of his own agendas. Any amount of time as President furthers one or more of those goals.
