That day had a huge effect on me. I was 12, about to be 13. I remember hearing a door slam downstairs... but there wasn't anyone downstairs... realized later that was the explosion I heard.

My dad and I drove to Yakima and the tri-cities area a day later... complete blackout conditions at noon:

The Mt St Helens eruption - and the day, May 18th - has always made me quietly introspective. It was such a huge once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing, to experience first hand a volcanic eruption... it implanted itself deeply into my psyche, and will always live there.

I filled a baby food jar with ash we got off the slide on the swing set.

1500 MILES AWAY.

I remember people selling the ash in little vials... after my dad and I had been driving through a FOOT of it for two days.

Seemed like selling ice to eskimos ... but I wish I had 1500 of those vials to sell for $20 a pop today!
