Today we are rolling out Hubski search.
It's over there on the lower left.
This is just an alpha version of Hubski search. However, IMO it is already superior to the Google and DuckDuckGo Hubski site search, so we decided to roll it out.
Here are a couple of things to know:
-When a search term is username or tag, HS lets you know.
-If you search for multiple terms, HS only returns posts and comments that contain all of the terms.
-If you include "or" or "OR" with your terms, HS returns posts and comments that contain any of the terms.
-HS is currently case-sensitive. Therefore, the terms "Hubski" and "hubski" do not provide the same results. However, searching for "Hubski or hubski" will return results for both terms.
There are a number of improvements to be made, and functions that we would like to add. However, I have already started to use Hubski search, and thought that you would like to too.
As always, feedback is much appreciated.
Well, TBH I don't have a lot of reference. The only semi-serious coding I did before this was in Fortran for modeling in physics research. That said, I love Arc (and Lisp). it's very intuitive, and I'm constantly seeing new horizons as I get more experience. I also like how I've needed to do pretty fundamental things for Hubski with the current state of Arc. There are a few drawbacks, of course, but the basic Arc web app is crazy stable. If need be, I can leave Hubski up for weeks at a time.
Noteworthy: Reddit has been through three completely different search engines in three years. They had some of us beta-test IndexTank a mere two years ago, then when they went from 100k subscribers to 2m, decided IndexTank simply wasn't up for the job. Nobody noticed.
I suggest you take whatever the user enters, add "hubski" to it, and do a google search on that.
Search on hubski never finds things that I know are there; it's crap.
Sorry but it's true; just try searching for something obscure, and compare that with a google search of the same thing plus "hubski" and you'll see what I mean.
First of all, my hats off to you for a job well done. I've been very excited about this and I like the way it functions and presents material. In particular, I like that the searched for word/phrase is in orange in the results. Looks great and at the same time serves a purpose. Initially my only suggestion would be to have it say "no results found" when non are. Only because it's a bit hard to tell if it's still "searching" or if it's done and nothing was found. Very cool mk. You should put some easter eggs in there. [edit] or better yet, while it is searching what about one of those animated hub-wheels that appears in the preview boxes?
Thanks. Those are good suggestions. As I said, it's very alpha. One thing I am going to do in short order is to create a search-optimized version of the database to reference. There's a lot that can be done upfront that I am not doing yet. That's one reason it's a bit slow. However, I was often wanting to look for a tag or a user, so for that reason alone, I thought it was worthwhile to push it out.
