My great-grandparents were immigrants who lived a similar life.
Having this baby makes me think about how I will raise her, how hard I will push her at what. Public education didn't serve me well, and I don't think I care how she does at it, I guess I'll pretend that I do until she does terribly and then probably sit back and pretend to support my wife if she gets punished for failing a class. I really don't care if my child excels at anything but reading and reasoning. I'll force her to lean to swim, play a bit of piano and maybe learn some self defense. Hope I don't turn her into a useless wastrel.
I think the most important thing parents can teach their children is eagerness to learn. Once they get that, everything else just comes along.
