This is one of the many areas that the Soviets bested the U.S.; They landed a probe on the surface of Venus, Venera 13, which functioned for all of ~2 hours, but beamed back some great pics: It was kinda weird that the wired.com article didn't mention that Russia's Venera program includes a successful landing. The Ars Technica article I stole the pics from is lovely. We need to figure out why Venus has essentially no magnetic field, and specifically whether or not it could be related to the retrograde rotation. Maybe someday.
