Is this a clear criticism of Obama's "inept" performance or is there some other connotation that I am not getting?

shoe77, While normally I'd agree with b_b that the New Yorker isn't always the most easily translated cover art, this one seems pretty straight forward. I think it's simply saying Obama didn't "show up" to the debate. He was an "empty chair". There's very little debate from either side as to how poorly he performed. That's it, I think.
