Oh, what a sweet secret code! I love this kind of thing - Lyrics site Genius suspects Google is copying lyrics from their website so implants a code in the lyrics, using straight and curly apostrophes to spell out "red handed" in Morse code.
Yep, Google copies their work and there's the proof, hiding in plain sight.
Well done, Genius. Well done.
I really want to hear the CEO of Google's partner company defend his claim that they made all of the lyrics in-house. I mean really, what's he going to say? "We put the same Morse Code into our own lyrics for the same reason! What a coincidence!" Oh also hi everyone, I haven't been online in like two years. How's it going?
"After a thorough internal investigation, we have determined that an intern was not following our company policies, and copied the lyrics in question. They have been terminated. We apologize to our valued partners and pledge to redouble our efforts to provide the best lyric transcription services for our clients." They didn't say that. Yet. But they will.
hopefully google (or third parties) will pay genius for the privilege, i wouldn't want google's lyrics feature to go away of course, the reason everyone uses genius is the crowdsourced footnotes, which were all done by volunteers. i don't know if the actual transcribing of raw lyrics on genius was also done by volunteers, or employees.
