We have decided that our userbase has reached perfection.
Actually, we just are getting slammed with bot accounts, and I need to upgrade our defenses.
Enjoy the exclusivity.
2 ether, respond before NYSE opening bell please thanks
We covered the hat: Tin foil is considered “loud”, but decorative, in either case. Thank you for asking.... The hat geometry is of no consequence, and constantly changes, so long as the requisite hat can be easily constructed from the cardboard that encases a 12-pack of beer. Cans and/or bottles. The average Hubski user typically has easy access to both, in the event of an emergency.
100% same situation here. Just hopped on late in the day because of boredom with the rest of the Internet, and I find that someone is living my life three days in the future. 😁
I agree with applewood on the downsides of referral concept. And wish the idea of mailing in proof of your not-bot status didn't have to be a joke, but it probably is. Surely hubski doesn’t have to be the inventor of this wheel; what do other little sites do to combat bot invasions? Is there anything pleb users like me can do to help?
No. The only way that makes sense is that to apply, they have to personally mail you or another admin a handwritten postcard and pray that you like the contents of the photo enough to let them join. Joking aside, I was invited to a private group through referral. I didn't join, because it wasn't my scene, but I know they exist. I get the suspicion that what we currently have going on, where someone can't post links until they've filled a circle or have been promoted, is part of the reason why the site is so slow in traffic these days. I try to counter act that by promoting users I come to discover clearly aren't bots, but some people just don't stick around that long. While referral makes some sense, I'm afraid it would create an echo chamber effect here, because that's how referral groups tend to operate. Application also makes sense, but I'm afraid people would get the impression that this place is elitist and/or unwelcoming. Either way, I'm worry that maybe both would tamper down on site traffic even further. Those are just my two cents. Ultimately this is your site and I respect your decisions in how to run it. To be fair, I've signed up for this place four times already, so obviously you're something right. :)
What kind of questions would ideally be on a short application? Is there anything in particular you would have to have an idea of to join hubski? Some people have different interests or ideas than others. Whatever questions are thought of could deter some potential members just because they don't like the questions.
"What are you passionate about, and (how) would you bring us on board?" looks like a way to go around those problems. Who doesn't like talking about stuff they find interesting or share it with people willing to listen? Some people have different interests or ideas than others. Well since I joined a couple of years ago, I have nothing to worry about unless I lose this account somehow. But right now, I am safe.
