A Project Mogul balloon became a crashed UFO, A-12 and U-2 flights become Project Blue Book and the whole Area 51 mythos leapt into being right about the time we started flying stealth fighters. "Belief in aliens" was a settled thing in the '60s. It was convenient. "Belief in aliens" is a settled thing again now that the dude with the hair is a meme.
